Vulcan hairstyles

Bluejay

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Just came across comments on hairstyles in another thread.

Think Mach said this ...

I to have no idea what was that stuff with Vulcan women and short hair.
Lt. Saavik had long hair too, and no one gave her any trouble for it, right? I'm pretty sure that there are more examples of long-haired Vulcan women.

I'm thinking the Romulans are the culprits. All of them (all who have thus passed the screen :p) have short hair. Being militaristic and having infiltrated High Command, they attempted to turn Vulcan into a clone of Romulan society, they probably also dictated Vulcan fashions.

I put it down solely to bad costume designing. The designers seem to think Vulcan=Bowl haircut, just as so many of the other races in modern Trek seem to have one hair style, one clothing style. It is laziness as well as a cheap, easy shortcut in costume design.

That or the Romulans were responsible for Vulcan's Next Top Model with T'Yra.:vulcan::rommie:

No, actually there were many long-haired Romulans in Trek - that female Commander in TOS, the bogus ambassador T'Pel in TNG, and there were a few of them in DS9 too.

And it was I who mentioned it and I mentioned T'Pring from Amok Time. But that's okay, I'm relatively new and 5 isn't:)

And I'm more inclined to agree with Kodos. It just became 'shorthand' for Vulcan.

It seems even more odd when here on Enterprise...they were trying to sell T'Pol as a sex object and yet they didn't give her a sexier haircut.

I don't know about you, but I think short hair, big brown eyes and pointed ears are kind of sexy!

I think we can safely ignore the latter Vulcans and Romulans since it's apparent somebody (guess who ; emotional, illogical, volatile:p ) came along to instil some fashion sense into them. We're talking about Romulans of an earlier era. :p ... I think there've been no female Romulan to grace ENT eps, right? So we can assume all of them have the same cut.

Me too, I loved the way T'Pol looked in seasons 2 & 3, but had the show continued beyond S4, a serious change in hairstyle would have been a nice touch IMO ("Twilight" T'pol was gorgeous BTW).

The "all one race wears this type of clothing and has this haircut" was an easy way for the audience to identify a more familiar species, esp considering all the 1000s of Trek races.

also, it kind of made sense because most of the species' members we encountered onscreen were serving in some official manner aboard a starship, where uniformity is encouraged over diversity for some races and in some sense

I get fully behind all efforts to raise awareness of short hair on women being hot. I ought to start a charitable foundation.

That said, T'Pol's short cut could've been somewhat better.

As for bowlcutted Vulcans being easy to identify, wouldn't the pointed ears give it away?

I suppose having short hair is the logical thing to do. It's much easier to keep and what is the use of having long hair, held in a ponytail if you do not plan to let it down on some more personal moments? For my part short hair is cute and it accentuates the pointy ears very nicely.

To aid in the discussion, I'd like to add a visual (just to prove my point)

She really does look nice in that pic, but then again, this isn't a typical bowl cut (and I wonder what happened to this wig from S3, the one they used in S4 sucked).

Had the show continued into season 5, I would have liked seeng T'Pol's hairdo updated into something like this:

Nice and feminine, yet pointy ears and crooked eyebrows still clearly visible.

I was just reading this thread and my 8-year old saw T'Pol's picture and said, "That boy looks a lot like ___", naming a boy in her class. She has a point, and this from someone who has never seen the show and has no context for this picture.

I do like T'Pol's short hair cut, but I'm not sure why they did it. If you look at pictures of the actress, her long hair looks very nice and she could easily have gone "as is" in the show. It's completely within the established canon since both Vulcan and Romulan women in TOS had various long hair styles. I don't generally like the physical changes they made with Vulcans and Romulans over the newer series. It wasn't necessary.

it isnt just the hairstyles..
but the way vulcans are thought to dress radically changed after tos.
there were no robes in tos.
from the little we see in tos from amok time and journey to babel vulcan women dressed in a stylish manner.

Yes, she looked good in that.... But the early bowl-cuts where just embarrassing.

And seeing her long-haired mirror character  just reinforced what they had been missing all along.
