Vina quote from The Cage

GulBahana

Commander
Red Shirt
This quote really resonated with me.

Vina : When dreams become more important than reality, you give up travel, building, creating. You even forget how to repair the machines left behind by your ancestors. You just sit, living and reliving other lives left behind in the thought record.

Seems to me Vina misses the mark completely here. If not for believing in dreams over reality, we wouldn't have bread on the table. That is, we wouldn't have either tables or bread.

Making bread relies on choosing to dream instead of going hunting and gathering. One has to dream of summer, of things unseen, of the future. And of the past, of how generations long gone did what one is about to embark on. One has to do travel, building and creating, all because of a dream. Without the dream, one doesn't have to.

The more dreaming, the better. Those who just blindly do are the ones doomed to pitiful extinction. Those who place dreams over reality can choose.

Wait. This is how I enjoy my life now that I'm finally retired. Don't make me feel guilty about it, man.

Wonder how it would look if they got Anson Mount to play Pike in a new version of The Cage? Trouble is they'd probably add Burnham to the cast as well! I'm still thinking here that the Talosians are going to turn up somehow in DSC!

Who would you cast as Vina, JB? Jennifer Lawrence resembles Susan Oliver, and can wear full body paint. Probably can't afford her.

Good choice, Henoch but no, they probably couldn't afford her and I doubt she'd be interested either!

Unless she is a trekkie...we know that the Talosian's mind powers can reach across many sectors of space. What if Vina comes aboard the ship to help Pike. Pike gets some romantic time with Vina, and she eventually saves the day using her power of illusion to fool the enemy. In the end, she was never there.

Here is some further dialogue (from a cut scene, found in the recent Star Trek: Lost Scenes book)
