Well, for better or worse the time has come for Venom to get its own thread.

The movie by director Ruben Fleisher and starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock is the first of Sony's proposed Spider-Man spin-off universe. The word on whether or not these stories take place on the same storytelling world as the MCU (ala the Netflix shows) is mixed, but is currently leaning towards "not".

The reviews so far have been less than stellar, which is disappointing. I didn't have a problem with a Peter Parker-less Venom story so long as the story was solid. Comparisons to Fan4astic and Catwoman are not promising.

The movie also stars Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams with a brief appearance by Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kassidy, a tease for a sequel that may never come. That part of it is truly a shame. Harrelson as Kassidy is perfect casting.

Unless the reviews are absolutely glowing (and early buzz suggests that won't be the case), I probably won't ever bother. I've never been a big fan of Venom, but I was willing to give it a chance because of Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Michelle Williams. However, the trailers haven't really excited me and the early buzz doesn't sound promising at all.

Hardy now backtracking on his "all my favourite scenes were cut" comments

Not a surprise. Someone in public relations probably gave him an earful for that one.

Yeah, I'm not a huge Venom fan myself, but I was hoping that against all odds Sony would produce a quality product given the talent involved. I may still see it, just for the purpose of having an informed opinion in the discussions (and I have nothing but time at the moment), but it's not a priority. In fact there are certain opinions here that I look forward to (and others that I'll just skip).

I like the character Venom, but nothing about this movie caught my interest. Good review scores could have changed my mind, but it's current 28% on Rotten Tomatoes pretty much puts the nail in the coffin.

I like Hardy a whole lot, but, I don't really give two shits about Venom, never have, even back in the 90s. And the trailers don't do a thing for me. And the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes... Easy pass.

Spiderman TAS did it right and if this film flops then hopefully one day maybe marvel will have a crack at it with Spiderman.

EDIT: I think the most disappointing thing about this, is that it probably prevents us from getting a MCU version of Venom, at least for a while. END OF EDIT
I was trying to be optimistic with this one, but the reviews have pretty put an end to that. I might check this out on Amazon if I can rent it for $2 or $3, but that's about all I'd be willing to spend on this.

The negative word of mouth doesn't seem to be affecting the projected box office. The budget on the movie was "only" a hundred million dollars, so it doesn't even need to make "Ant-Man" money in order to be profitable for the studio.

Maybe we'll get to see Woody Harrelson as Carnage after all. If there was ever a comic book character role that was perfect for Woody Harrelson, it is Carnage.

Surely that would've been the case regardless of the quality of the movie, because Marvel Studios doesn't control the license to the character. It was complicated enough to negotiate the deal to share Spider-Man himself.

Anyway, a Marvel universe without Venom in it is fine by me.

So apparently

Venom and Eddie make out at one point. I hear the symbiote inhabits a woman so maybe it doesn't sound so weird

Or it's actually She-Venom

It’s his former girlfriend who makes out with Eddie as a way to transfer the symbiotic back to him.

It was alright. Better than the Predator I thought. Some subtle allysions to the Spider Verse with Jameson’s son and the Bugle’s competitor in NY. There’s even a DC reference.
The mid credit scene with Woody playing Cletus makes the sequel sound promising, but I doubt it will ever be made. The post credit one will be very confusing to people not aware of the Into the Spider-Verse cartoon coming since it’s just a 3 minute preview of that.
I thought Venom was handled rather well but I did think he was”too nice”. I felt they should have made him darker. I also think doing his origin without Spidey was very weird.

Why is Venom appealing to so many? Just because he kills people? I don't get it.

Probably.
And honestly, he does have a cool look to him (though, oddly, I find it works better on the page and just looks silly in live action). But that's the biggest problem, there's not a lot under the superficial to make him compelling enough to, at least to me, sustain a solo movie or franchise.

He had an awesome design (which ironically doesn't translate well to live action) and was Spidey's big "Evil Twin" character (which he'd been inventive enough to not need for 25 years until that point).
