TV producer Stephen J. Cannell passes away at age 69.

The man behind such TV shows as The A-Team, 21 Jump Street, Wiseguy, Silk Stalkings, Hardcastle and McCormick, Riptide, Baretta, The Commish, The Rockford Files and The Greatest American Hero passed away at his at his home Thursday due to complications associated with melanoma.

Oh God. I had no idea. His shows were the background noise of my childhood.

How very, very sad. :(

The man made some good tee-vee. Rockford and Magnum, in particular, are a copule of my favorites.

Cannell didn't create Magnum; that was Bellasario and Larson. He did appear on the show once, though (in a tiny part as a hotel security man), and was one of the poker-playing writers on Castle.

I had no idea he was in ill health. This is sudden, surprising news. I watched a number of his shows growing up, and while I wasn't necessarily a fan of most of them, there's no denying his pervasive influence on at least three decades' worth of television. The Greatest American Hero was probably my favorite one of his shows, and I've gained some belated appreciation for The A-Team since I came to understand it was an intentional parody and a comedy.

Death is being a real bitch to the great people of Hollywood this week. :(

R.I.P. Mr Cannell...thanks for the TV of my childhood.

:( Wow...I watched all those shows you listed here.

I enjoyed his shows, but lately, I've enjoyed his on-screen recurring guest appearances as one of Richard Castle's mystery-writing poker buddies, on "Castle". It was just fun seeing him there, with fellow writers James Patterson and Michael Connelly.

RIP to the father of The A-Team. Not everything he created was "great TV" but it sure as hell was fun and a lot more enjoyable to watch than most of what's out there. That kind of fun is missing from today's TV.

A sad day indeed.

That's too bad. I was a big fan of Rockford growing up. Good TV all around--he leaves quite a legacy.

Damn. I second the "his shows were my background noise" -- he did good stuff. :(

RIP, sir. Thanks for all the great hours.

Wow, I had no idea he was ill!
Rest in peace, Mr. Cannell. Your work was enjoyed by millions, and will carry on after you.

Godspeed, Sir.
