Tron: Ares

Yep! Apparently there is one coming -- or maybe not now. News to me too. This article rolled across my Facebook feed this morning:

https://variety.com/2023/film/news/...150-crew-members-laid-off-strikes-1235696869/

[Jared] Leto is starring in “Tron: Ares” as Ares, the manifestation of a program that becomes sentient and crosses over into the human world, with “Past Lives” star Lee as a video game programmer and tech company CEO who aims to protect her world-changing technology.

Sounds like it's unrelated to the previous films. The tech company might be the same, but doesn't seem there will be any familiar characters.

Interested to see where they take it.

Yeah, I saw this news awhile ago, but it's lack of connection with Legacy and the focus on Jared Leto seriously deflates my interest despite my undying love for the first two films. All of that and I'm still bitter about how Disney treated Uprising.

I'll keep an open mind but my expectations are pretty low right now.

Jared Leto? No thanks. I don't know why but Hollywood always seems to fixate on one particular actor it's desperate to try and make work in almost every project imaginable, despite all the evidence that it just doesn't. A decade ago it was Shia LaBeouf, now for some reason it's Jared Leto.

Doubly bonkers choice given the last movie set up Cillian Murphy (an actual character actor with chops AND a history with good genre movies) in a future expanded role as Dillinger Jr.

It's been so long since I've seen Legacy that I forgot all about Murphy's role. Unfortunately, he'd be rather expensive to get now (though not moreso than Leto).

I'm not sure what to make of this right now, I don't mind Jared Leto, but it would be nice to find out exactly how this connects back to the other movies.
Legacy left with a ending that could have led to an interesting follow up, and they even had a program in the real world. So there was a perfect opportunity to explore the ideas this one appears to be dealing with, but do it with a character we are already familiar with.

Yeah, that's the other disappointing factor for me. So much wasted potential thrown out the window (like the possible return of Tron) all for something completely new that no one cares about...and Jared Leto.

Much as I love Tron, there's nothing about this new one that excites me so far. Poor lead, average director

Dillinger will apparently now be played by Evan Peters.

If that's true, I think it's a good choice. He's does the dark villain quite well. In fact, I think George Lucas should go back to the Star Wars movies and edit him in as Anakin Skywalker!

Tron Legacy - there was a discontinuity between the in-computer realm and the real realm. If the 1982 original was cognizant of this, why can't the sequels? TL didn't and didn't wow me with any plotting, and the visuals were unimpressive. What can III really do? Besides, mainframes have since replaced by server farms - there are some possibilities, that's for sure...how to get the MCP into another system. basic nerdery 101...

Yeah, that was definitely setting up TR3N. Bruce Boxleitner even said that "Cillian Murphy doesn't do cameos". IIRC, the plan was that Dillinger Jr. was in cahoots with his father the whole time, plotting to take back control of Encom.

That was also in the original. Flynn spends at least several days in the Game Grid yet when he materializes back in the real world it's almost right after he left it.

So the time discontinuity is hardly unique to Legacy.

IIRC you can even calculate what the differential actually is based on a line Flynn says about cycles. I forget the math, but I'm pretty sure it works out that the few decades he was absent from the our world, was several thousand years on the grid for him.

I'm surprised it didn't drive Flynn insane!

It's like the movie Groundhog Day when I've heard it suggested that Bill Murray's character (from his perspective) spends like 10,000 years in the time loop. That would drive anybody WAY the hell over the edge, I should think.

Just ask Kurtwood Smith...

Or have them achieve enlightenment and thus escape the cycle, which is exactly what happens. ;)

I just hope this involves at least one member of the Flynn family in some way. It would be kind of weird at this point to not get a Tron movie without a Flynn involved.

Sam could still be around. He probably has a family of his own by now. Perhaps with Quorra.

I guess my real question is whether or not Bruce will participate. He was hopeful after Legacy came out, but I believe I read a few years ago, that he’s done waiting.

They want to recast, fine, but Tron without Bruce, personally, would not work for me.

Yeah, if we can't have Jeff Bridges, then I really hope we can at least get Bruce Boxleitner back.

I'm fine with no Jeff Bridges since Legacy was a clear passing of the baton for him and Flynn, while the film also set up the return of Tron.

And that's what frustrates me about this upcoming film based on what little we know: It doesn't appear to care about either of those things.
