Trek Prop Replicas - Tricorders, Phasers, and Tribbles - Oh my.

Growing up, I always wanted to own a piece of the show - a screen-accurate phaser, a tricorder, a uniform. Having seen all the wonderful offerings from the original Master Replicas company, The Roddenberry Company, The Wand Company, and more recently Factory Entertainment, I was curious as to what, if any, prop replicas you may have in your collections?

My holy grails growing up were your standard away team faire - the TNG Cobra and Boomerang phasers, the Mark VII and Mark IX Tricorder, and a FC Phaser rifle. There were times I scoured the Star Trek: The Experience replica website and came *this close* to buying something, even though I didn't have $500 for the EMH's mobile emitter. Ironically, gold pressed latinum seemed the most affordable prop, but not by much. I wanted to own an LCARS panel, dammit!

The closest I would ever get back in the day were thanks to playmates - my Insurrection boomerang phaser, and TNG science tricorder. Art Asylum scratched the itch somewhat with their Trek Tek offerings of Enterprises' Phase pistol and communicator, but these always left me wanting something more. Something with a little more weight and less screw holes and plastic.

I missed a lot of great replicas and opportunities to get them which now have befallen as obtainable only on the secondary markets: The Master Replicas FC Phaser, The Roddenberry/EFX Science Tricorders. I don't recall ever seeing any decent phaser rifle replica, the closest being a nerf replica (which I shamelessly bought and sits next to me as I type. I would mention ANOVOS products, but I have heard the horror stories before/during/after the companies collapse, and don't wish to trigger PTSD for those on the board.

These days, it seems Factory Entertainment has taken up the torch once carried by the previously mentioned companies. Their first offerings were a Borg Queen skull and spine replica from First contact for $1499. They followed up with a TNG hypospray and hand scanner, and some early TNG cricket and dustbuster phaser replicas. They also produced an Ilia sensor probe and Kirk Badge replica from TMP, and they recreated Khans necklace from TWOK. Their latest is a replica of the Phaser from Strange New Worlds.

For those looking for TOS replicas, The Wand Company has put out some fantastic replicas of TOS Communicator (that doubles as a Bluetooth phone) and a TOS Phaser (that doubles as a universal remote). I managed to get both of these, but their TOS Tricorder eludes me. It's been in the words quite some time, but it looks fantastic and like it will be packed full of goodies. Still waiting for preorders to open on this one.

Some would say (rightfully so) that these are expensively priced compared to what was offered back in the early 2000s/2010s. Even so, I recently decided to take the plunge and splurge on my first Tricorder replica. The pre-orders sold out and I received an e-mail last night saying these are ready to ship out to customers, and I can't wait to get my mitts on it and share it with the rest of the group.

FE's latest offerings are probably going to be of interest to TNG fans, although I won't fork over $500 for a replica of Geordi's VISOR. They will be offering the TNG "Cobra" Phaser, which will open to show internal mechanics as well as seen on the show. Adam Savage got to play with that and I believe a FC Phaser rifle, and I am very jealous, indeed.

Anyone manage to acquire something screen-used or a screen-accurate replica for their collections? Anyone pick up anything from the Christie's auction in the 2000s? If you want, share it here!

I actually have 2 fairly accurate replicas in my collection with a 3rd on order. I have the WAND Company's TOS phaser and TOS communicator. Both are reproductions from laser scanned "hero" props, so they are very accurate. Bought the communicator "new", but had to get the phaser off of E-Bay (Ooooffff....). Both are extremely fun to play with. I've got their TOS Tricorder on order which should finally come available this year (Spring?)

Medical Tricorder arrived this morning! I am super excited and can't wait to show it off. It came with a big sign emphasizing the importance of charging the unit fully before using for the first time, so that is what I am doing now. In the meantime, I thought I would show off what came in the box.

It came well-packaged in a brown shipper box that kept everything nice and secured. Inside the mailer is some generic Star Trek packaging with some nice art of the TNG crew that will fit in well with most other Trek Merchandise.

Opening this box leads to some more protective padding (I say the more the merrier) and then we get to two LCARS laden brochures - the instruction booklet and a COA that talks about the prop. Underneath, the beautiful wooden window box with glass panel is accentuated with the TNG combadge logo laser-etched into the glass. So far everything has been top quality. Now, on to the meat and potatoes.

Finally, after working my way through the layers of foam and protective padding, we get to the actual Mark VII Medical Tricorder and hand scanner. The Tricorder is all die-cast and heavy. The top sensor module detaches to give you access to the charging port, which is a standard mini USB port (Think PS4 controller or android smart phone before USB Type C). The Hand scanner had some smudges and dust on it but it was easily polished with my sleeve and now looks flawless. I tried out the lights and sounds on the hand scanner, which uses a smaller A23 battery (think remote control for ceiling fan). It's cool and it has just the right volume - not too loud but loud enough. It also lacks that piercing sound you get with some replica SFX.

That brings us to the dreaded charging phase on the Mark VII. More to come once the unit is charged. Fun Fact: The charging light takes the place of the old power switch on the playmates model. Green = charged and good to go :bolian:

Both are great replicas and I TWC TOS Phaser easily replaced my Art Asylum Phaser as my go-to prop replica.

I feel your pain on purchasing though - I had purchased both from Best Buy for $150 a pop. Seeing them on secondary markets now at a 400% markup is mindblowing

The VISOR could be a fashion statement reborn as it really did look cool. When's Gen-Z gonna make this cool and not sus or whatever the pretentious colloquialisms are?

Tricorder is all charged up and ready to go. Picking it up and opening it for the first time and hearing the little ratchet sound before all the lights and sound cued up was an such a satisfying experience. I've been playing around with the buttons/features and getting acclimated to it. I tried scanning my dogs - my french bulldog was unphased, but my other dog went running.

It (the tricorder, not the dog. He is a good boy.) is definitely on the heavier side being all die-cast construction, and it is exactly what I expected a tricorder to feel like. At this point, I am trying to be careful with handling it so as not to drop it or do something stupid that will damage it on Day 1.

Quality and craftsmanship are top-notch, with the exception of a few barely noticeable imperfections. Mainly, with the paint near the hinges and with the housing of the tricorder on the edge where the bottom half meets the top half when it's closed (below the playmates tricorder power switch location) These imperfections are so minor, I would be amazed if anyone can spot them in the photos.

The hand scanner - the little light up top does light up red, with the circumferential green LEDs going around. I tried to take a photo at just the right moment to show this and failed, but you get the jist of it.

All in all, great replica. I really hope they do the science tricorder, as well as "slanted top" tricorder we saw in later seasons of DS9 and Voyager. I will probably pass on the SNW Phaser, but I am keeping my eye out for the TNG Cobra Phaser.

How wonderful it would be if you were to wave this prop over someone who was desperately ill, and they fully returned to health within minutes!!! There is something to be said for the power of the placebo effect!

Beautiful replica. :luvlove:

My friend's wife is a huge Trekkie as well. She has had this exact same philosophy, but for the transporter.

She playfully will look over at her husband, then back at me and say "One of these days.... I'll find one and beam myself out of here."
