TOS-era Insignia

I have been searching the interwebs off and on looking for fan created TOS-era insignia. You've seen mine. Are there any others out there that are interesting?

This is the one I made for the U.S.S. Gemini, the Surya-Class ship for a new TOS-era fanfic I'm developing.

Question for you good people: Was there any canon references for the TOS Vulcan Intrepid insignia (either printed or implied)?

Rob

IIRC, the only canon TOS badges were:

1: the delta-shield used by the Enterprise crew, plus others whose affiliation was apparently not the Enterprise in "Court Martial" and "The Menagerie, Part II".

2: Commodores Wesley, Stocker, Barstow, Stone and Mendez, as well as Admirals Komack, Fitzgerald and Westervliet wore the starburst-style insignia. (As did Starfleet prosecutor Areel Shaw and Miss Piper.)

3: Commodore Decker wore the pretzel-shaped insignia in "The Doomsday Machine"

4: Captain Tracey wore the upright rectangular insignia in "The Omega Glory"

5: There were various other insignias and/or patches worn by other guest cast, representing other units. Among these, the most spectacular was probably the "hand" insignia worn by penal colony personnel during "Dagger of the Mind" and "Whom Gods Destroy".

There was never a canon reference to a specific insignia for the Intrepid. Any insignia that has been associated with the Intrepid was merely non-canon fan conjecture. Any assertion that insignia are designated for specific space vessels is also non-canon, supported by the producers apparently stated intent, but contradicted by on-screen evidence. (See #1, above.)

If fans are going to speculate, then speculate we shall: I say the famous delta-shield indicated that the Enterprise, and possibly other vessels, were part of the First Fleet or some wing therein. Other insignia would therefore belong to other fleets or wings therein, and the starburst would be Starfleet Command flag hierarchy.

Don't forget the insignia wore by Hansen in "Balance of Terror" and that Cestus III guy in "Arena."

Wingsley....thanks for the clarification; sooooo, the interpretation as drawn by Robert Wood, and shown by Bjo Trimble in STC (for the Intrepid, as well as the others), is also purely speculative, or could it be considered semi-canon?

hmm someday im going to add that book to my library of trek goodness.... Thanks for the info i also wondered what Intrepids badge was like i assumed it would be vulcan in origin :)

The Intrepid insignia from the Concordance is conjectural. However, I think the insignia from the Aiel (below it) is from the Animated series.

I thought these might be of interest to some, as I have not seen them discussed or posted anywhere lately. They are from an old book I dug out recently. It's called the Starfleet Uniform Recognition Manual by Shane Johnson (of Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise fame) and was published by The Noron Group in 1985. I picked it up at a con c. 1988. The pinkish color is original, I added the captions in black for convenience as the numbered key was on another page.

If you're interested in making your own badges, there are quite a few dingbat fonts that would be suitable. All you would need besides those would be clipart versions of the departmental symbols, plus some textures.
