Top 10 Science Fiction movies for 2009

^^
:p

I need to see The Road. It still hasn't made its way to this part of the country yet, although the "coming soon" poster has been up at the theatre for a few weeks.

1. Children of Men
2. Wall-E
3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
4. Avatar
5. Sunshine
6. Star Trek
7. District 9
8. Serenity
9. A.I.: Artificial Intelligience
10. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Honorable Mentions: War of the Worlds, Terminator: Salvation, 28 Days Later, The Core and 2012 (two really bad great guilty pleasures), Minority Report, The Mist and should Super Hero films be mentioned as well? They have sci-fi aspects.

Gah! I should've read the title of thread more carefully I thought it was a best of the decade list. This is my revised list from what I've seen so far for 2009.

1. Avatar
2. Star Trek
3. District 9
4. Terminator: Salvation
5. Knowing
6. 2012
7. Monsters vs. Aliens
8. Watchmen
9. Zombieland
10. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Haven't seen Moon or The Road yet but I get the feeling they may bump a couple of flicks of my list when I do get around to seeing them.

Well, I still haven't seen The Road, or a few other titles, but I perhaps I can assemble half a list.

1. Moon
2. Star Trek
3. Avatar
4. District 9
5. Zombieland

Knowing, Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, Land of the Lost, and Friday the 13th (science fiction?) don't place. Is Zombieland even science fiction? Well, for this list, I'll allow it. I had to find some way to get to at least five.

... Knowing, Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, Land of the Lost, and Friday the 13th (science fiction?) don't place.

I included it in my list because it fits under SciFi/Fantasy, with horror films bein' a part of the fantasy. Sure, its a stretch, but I think it works.

Is Zombieland even science fiction?

Why wouldn't it be? Something artificial creates zombies and we follow the adventures of a small band of survivors through the course of the film.

I'd consider it primarily part of the comedy-horror subgenre of horror film. But, you're right, a non-supernatural explanation is provided for the zombie outbreak, which is enough to qualify it as science fiction. I had forgotten that detail.

But all is relative in genre studies, where most academic quibbles aren't worth the time.

Like many others I only got to see a few films last year, and despite best laid plans, the weather in my part of the world wrecked any plans I had to go see a few movies over the Christmas holidays.

I did see Star Trek and Watchmen and I thought both were great films. I also got a kick out of The Spirit which wasn't a great film, but a fun film, and there's a difference.

This is just for SF so I won't count Half Blood Prince.

Of the other SF films released last year, I am interested in seeing Moon which appears to have a 2001/Solaris vibe. It'll be on DVD/BR soon, I'm told (tomorrow, actually). I want to see Avatar but am not interested in the 3-D aspect which I can't see anyway. For awhile the 2-D version was playing here in my city but I don't know if it still is; I'll probably end up seeing it on BR later.
