So I was greatly anticipating the long-awaited "Darth Plagueis" novel. I'd really enjoyed the "Darth Bane" trilogy of books, and I figured that this would be on par.(I know it was different authors)
Well, as it turns out, it was less of a character study of Plagueis than of Palpatine, and the book is more of a prequel to TPM than a book about the Sith. More along the lines of Luceno's "cloak of deception" and "labyrinth of evil." The second half of the book is basically just a connect the dots of "Palpy meets with Dooku," "Palpy meets Nute Gunray," "Padme becomes queen," etc. It's like the author was going through a lost of TPM's plot points and writing the book backwards from there.
Further, Plagueis just isn't that interesting a character to focus on. In the "Darth Bane" books it wasn't the rather silly Sith philosophy stuff that made it work, it was that the story was interesting, that he was the guy who changed so much, and how he climbed his way up, etc.
Plagueis just isn't that interesting, except for the midichlorian manipulation stuff which is largely dropped from the book in the second half anyway. I just found that I struggled to stay interested in this story. Maybe it should have started earlier in Plagueis' life and not been so much of a prequel book.
