The most deserving Negus ever; Rom's very own appreciation thread!

GhostFaceSaint

From Memory Alpha:
Rom is the son of Keldar and Ishka, younger brother of Quark, and father of Nog. A failure as a businessman but a mechanical genius, he worked as a waiter for several years at Quark's on Deep Space 9 before becoming an engineer in the Bajoran Militia. He eventually succeeded Zek as Grand Nagus of Ferenginar.

It's time to celebrate the ultimate underdog on DS9; Rom!

Sorry. He was more annoying than Neelix on VOY, and that's saying something. He's probably my least favorite character in all of Trek.

I suppose you mean Nagus.

Negus was the title of the King of Ethiopia. This information was sponsored by the "I'm pedantic and I have no life" Society of America. ;)

I liked Rom, but did not really understand why he was chosen Grand Nagus, especially that he did not have the "lobes for business". How could he run the vast Ferengi financial empire? How could he keep all the males from oogling Leeta?

Because Zek was senile and his girlfriend kept asking him to make her clueless son the Nagus instead of her business-savvy one.

I think she did it so she could retain some control of the Ferengi Alliance. To push her agenda of making women more equal or simply to profit by it.

While I believe that Quark would be at least open to the notion of making women more equal with men given his experience with females and female Ferengi he is harder to control. On the flip side it makes him more difficult to influence in the way Rom and Zek could be. Plus if you believe she did it for noble purposes Quark is not as likely as Rom to do something purely out of kindness without having to work out some outrageous profit making scheme before hand.

That time when he made that base hit for the Niners was definitely a tingle moment.

I like Rom, but most deserving?

I just don't see that. He was a genius when it came to tech, but definitely not when it came to business.

Sadly I think Rom would be deposed or straight up executed fairly quickly as Grand Nagus. He doesn't have the killer instinct needed to stay on top in the ruthless world of Ferengi high finance.

I also found it really obnoxious that the writers started moving the Ferengi model more towards that of humans.

I rather liked Rom - but actually, it should be Roms since there were...what, three different versions? At least? The writers changed him so often and in such unlikely ways that I lost all patience with them. Most of the Rom versions I liked at least somewhat, and I liked the engineering-idiot-savant Rom quite a bit, but there's no way the inept schemer of the first season or two was the same character as the engineering idiot savant of the middle seasons, and as Destro points out, there's no way that the engineering idiot savant would be successful as Negus.

I mean, sheesh, I'm all for character growth, but it's supposed to be growth...not mutation!
