The Magnificent Seven (2016)

Kai "the spy"

Remake of the classic western franchise, starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, and others. Directed by Antoine Fuqua of "Training Day" and "The Equalizer" fame. Also probably the last movie to feature original music by the late James Horner.

I'm looking forward to this.

With that cast and that soundtrack, it is certainly worth a chance...but I wish there were not so many remakes and reboots and redos. Seems like all the stories have been written and filmed and told. Now, we just have old stories told with new casts and new looks.

Plus, it is Criminal that Timothy "Justified" "Deadwood" Oliphant is not amongst the cast...

Good director and a very good cast, but it will have to work hard to live up to the Yul Brynner version.

I looked at the IMDb credits and didn't recognize any of the character names. So is it a remake of the 1960 Western, or a new Western take on The Seven Samurai?

When I saw the thread title I was just gearing up for an epic eye roll until I saw the cast list and director. That is a VERY impressive list of actors. But they have a lot to live up to. Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, STEVE (f--king) McQUEEN! The coolness factor alone in the original is nearly off the charts. How they cover this will be the major factor for me in how well the new movie measures up to the original classic.

I suspect it will be similar to the 90s' TV show, taking the basic premise of seven hired guns fighting for justice in the old west and doing their own thing on anything else. Maybe take the odd line of dialogue as a homage, and at least two characters are loosely based on the characters of Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen from the original.

Thankfully this seems to a straightforward adventure flick and hopefully a move away from the "misery-lit" rut that the modern western has been stuck in for the last while.

The original Brynner - McQueen film led to a few sequels(of varying results) so if this movie is successful, then there may be a chance to see some modern day actors get a chance to "saddle up".(someone mentioned Timothy Oliphant, who seems well suited to the genre IMO.

Looks like fun.

And, yeah, I can't get bent out of shape about them remaking a movie that was a remake in the first place.
I'm interested in who they're helping out. In Seven Samurai and Magnificent Seven they're helping the downtrodden who are the folks these guys are usually on the side doing the trodding. When I see that town in the previews, it doesn't feel quite the same class of people in need of saving.

I'm not one for westerns but this film does look good from the trailer, and Chris Pratt could make me watch pretty much anything.

Huh. If I ever knew about that, I've completely forgotten it.

Look it up some time. It's nothing special, but it's fun, and Michael Biehn and Ron Perlman are among the Seven. Plus, Robert Vaughn had a recurring role as the judge.

^It's on DVD. Or at least, I bought it on DVD years ago - don't know if it's still available.

Hmm.... a remake of a movie that was basically a remake of another movie in the first place.

I'm cautiously optimistic, as always.

I never saw the TV show, but the first "Magnificent Seven" movie was classic, and I love it. The sequels were so-so, but had a lot of fun moments. There's a set of all the movies on blu ray available for about $15. That's a pretty good deal, IMO.

The Magnificent Seven? I don't even remember seeing the first six. :wtf:

You're joking, right?

My first reaction with these things is always the same ; 'why reboot a classic?' but then I remember how I actually enjoyed watching, for example, True Grit (to keep it Western) so I'll certainly give it a go.

I think this version will be fun but I doubt it will measure up to the Brynner/McQueen version. Nothing beats Bernstein's amazing score!
