The Garfield Movie (Summer 2024)

There's a new Garfield movie, and it looks pretty good. I love Garfield, and have ever since I first started reading him in the comics as a kid. Then the Garfield & Friends cartoon happened, and Garfield found his voice with Lorenzo Music, a perfect fit as far as I was concerned.

Then we got the Garfield films with Bill Murray, another great voice casting.

The new film? Chris Pratt in his Chris Pratt voice is the voice of Garfield.
That is some bullshit.

Here's the trailer.

Anyone else remember Garfield Minus Garfield? That was pretty awesome back in the day.

Was it a studio requirement in the SAG deal that Chris Pratt voice all animated feature leads without changing his voice in perpetuity? Maybe they can do a word bank and use AI to have him do every animated part in every movie until the fall of civilization. So, like, maybe 50 years.

Great question, and I wish I knew. I was able to get used to it for Mario, because I really did have fun with the movie, and it won't stop me from watching this one either, but for goddess sake, there are thousands of incredible voice actors, recognizable voice actors, how the hell is Chris Pratt getting these roles, and he's not even doing more than the bare minimum?

I went to a convention about 6 years ago with a bunch of voice actors, and Maurice Lemarch was asked if he'd ever do a Pinky and The Brain movie. He said absolutely, he'd jump at the chance but he'd never be allowed too. If they made a Pinky and the Brain movie the Brain would be voiced by Brad Pitt or some other movie star, and he'd do it in his normal voice, because animated movies use recognizable stars as the leads, not voice actors, and if they're paying for the star they're getting that recognizable voice in the trailer and the movie.

I saw him and Rob Paulsen again last year and they talked about how Maurice was shocked he was even allowed to come back to voice the new animaniacs show. He didn't think they'd even let them back for it, and it only happened because Speilberg made an ultimatum with WB. No OG voice actors, no show.

It's a-me, Garfield.

Anyone else remember Garfield Minus Garfield?
I still wish they'd release raw portions of the first Bill Murray Garfield movie. (So no the CG or voice. Just the live action Jon talking to himself like a deranged shut-in.) ;)

Never understood the fascination with this concept. It was disturbing then; it's disturbing now.

Yup, recognitzability of the name goes a long way.

Also, it's not like the Garfield and Friends cartoon will ever be beat. I didn't enjoy the live action films but this might be interesting.

Talking to yourself is disturbing?
I do it all the time at home.
