The Expanse season 2

RAMA

Admiral
Admiral
Lots to like here.. What I like the most.. Armor/suit that actually takes damage, unlike the majority scifi suits that appear to have no reason at all for their existence..yes the stormtroopers in SW are merely the worst offenders. Kudos to The Expanse, the Best Scifi series.

Also personal guided missles that actually hit targets unlike the usual 5v show convention.

I wish they replayed the first season episodes rather than just having them on Amazon. I already have cable & Netflix, I don't need yet another thing to pay for. Trying to remember all the important parts of S1, is there a recap somewhere?

But very happy to have this back!

I thought it was a great start to the second season. The battle was pretty intense. Looks like they're delving right into the mystery about what the protocells are (forget the exact name). Not sure why Miller shot the head guy on the space station? Maybe just because he was an egotistical ass! He was pretty full of himself and his role in human evolution.

Looking forward to more!

Because his experiment was responsible for Julie Mao's death, and revenge was all that Miller cared about.

It wasn't bad, now that we're past the preliminaries and the story arcs are really starting to advance and provide some answers. But I'm not at all fond of the Bobbie Draper character yet; she's too much of a one-note warmonger. I hope she goes through some growth over the season, and soon.

Humongous science gaffe: The missiles blowing apart the "ice moon" Phoebe and the fragments allegedly all spiralling down into Saturn's atmosphere in what seemed to be a matter of minutes. Phoebe is one of Saturn's outermost moons, it's made of maybe 50% rock, it's a couple hundred kilometers across so it'd be hard to shatter the whole thing, and it takes more than a year to orbit Saturn. So even if it could be completely fragmented, and even if somehow every single fragment magically ended up on a trajectory toward Saturn, it'd take them months to get there. This was an incredibly egregious bit of bad science as a sloppy excuse to say all the evidence on Phoebe was destroyed. They could've done it a better way, say, by having the missiles melt the moon so that it'd be too hot for anyone to land on for years.

D'oh! He even said as much.

Completely agree with that!

Just finished the premiere, pretty damn good. The highlight for me was the Earth stuff, mostly because this is new material not covered in the novels, but also it was just really interesting. I especially like the work they've done with the Admiral, who was basically just an exposition piece last year, and have turned him into a somewhat interesting character. And with a transfer out to the Belt, it seems likely he'll be revisited in some manner as the season develops.

The Martian stuff was really good, and Bobbie Draper is every bit as great a character as he is in the novels. Though it's interesting, in the show we actually are seeing her more in a military setting and interacting among fellow Marines, which I only just realized while watching the show, wasn't something we saw very much of in the novels, despite the pivotal role she plays and the fact she was in a good deal of combat throughout the novels.

The space battle was awesome, I especially liked the bit with them depressurizing the Rocinante to minimize how much trouble would be caused when their hull gets breached. That was neat, and certainly an interesting idea.

That was a tactic they used in Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, and the show's science advisor talked with us fans about it back on the old show boards. It has two advantages. The obvious one is that it keeps the air from being lost when you get holes in your hull. The more important one is that it keeps the heat and shock waves of impacts/explosions from being propagated through the air to the rest of the ship, so it confines the damage to a smaller area and insulates the crew. If a projectile hits someone directly, they're dead, but if it flies past just a little way behind them, it'll have no effect.

Worst f-word censoring ever, lol

Still think Fred Johnson is the least space sounding name ever.

I think I need to watch last season's finale again because I was a little lost with where the story was going. I'm getting too old to follow the plots from a year ago.

You referring to Avasarala at the briefing? So that was censoring? I actually thought the sound crapped out briefly. Of course, it didn't help matters that the next commercial break after that the picture did freeze up momentarily.

But yeah, that was a sloppy way to censor out profanity. Besides, isn't this show on late enough to get away with profanity?

Everything but the F-word, these days. That's still the big no-no. But it wasn't that long ago that the S-word was bleeped on cable too, and these days it isn't. I expect the censors will just give up trying before much longer.

The sound crapped out right after the word and the captions don't show it so I'm assuming that was a botch.

It doesn't even have to be on late enough as it's on cable but most basic cable networks don't allow it but it's a weird thing where they all have their own standards they've set for themselves. Sort of like how many will show rear nudity but not female nipples (and damned if The Magicians isn't screaming out for it) . Limited judicious use of the f-bomb has started to creep it's way in but it's not common place. I don't try but the way my head works I notice and keep a sort of mental tally of the networks and how far they will go, I need help.

Technically, even the broadcast networks can (after 10PM I believe?) but they haven't been pushing that envelope too far yet (though Kristen Stewart accidentally dropped the f-bomb on SNL last night).
