The EMH and Seven Singing...

In "Someone to Watch Over Me", what did you think of the famous scene where Seven of Nine and the Doctor were singing "You are My Sunshine"? Was it a genuinely touching moment or schmaltzy rubbish?

I thought it was great at the time, but seeing it again on YouTube I found the scene rather silly on hindsight, but it was better than the scenes where hippy sang in TOS (also Ryan and Picardo are surprisingly good singers).

It's not my favorite song, but the people involved made it a good scene. I would argue that it's not meant to be seen in isolation on YouTube but in the context of the episode.

I remember watching that scene for the first time and being reminded of why I liked Voyager in the first place. But it's funny; when Seven first showed up in "Scorpion", I don't think anyone looked at her and thought, "I bet she'll be singing duets with the Doctor."

Speaking of the Doctor and Seven singing.

Picardo actually considered professional singing at one point. All of his singing (with the exception of one complicated song sung by an 'improved' Doctor in 'Virtuoso') is his. I think all of his singing on the show is wonderful, one of the main reasons Voyager appealed to me.

Personal favourite: The absurd rendition of an aria at the start of "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy". :)

It was my favorite scene in all of Season 5. Picardo and Ryan had great singing chemistry together.

I found an MP3 of this a while back somewhere on the net.. I do indeed like that scene, and Picardos vocal work.

It was only "schmaltzy rubbish" because of Picardo's tortured warbling. Jeri's voice is really pretty and sweet. Picardo's is harsh, disonant, and that vibrato he is so obviously proud of...Oy!

Whose idea was it to continue to feature his singing anyway?

Hey, I thought Picardo singing in "Virtuoso" was great, even though the EMH gradually taken over the show over the course of half a decade was getting tiring.

I think that's part of the character, actually. The Doctor is a very proud, very show-off-y kinda guy; he's exactly the sort of person who would completely over-sing instead of going for a smooth sound.

Agreed with Eminence.

Picardo has some rep as a "great singer" but I think grossly undeserved.

IF that was Ryan singing, and I believe it was, she has, by far, the greater singing talent/ability.
