The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made material

I will start with this video I put together a few years ago. A side by side comparision of two wonderful artists and their own unique vision of the classic episode.

And of course, the Constellation uniform insignia...

Wow, I like both of them more than what CBS went with (although I was 80% happy there, too). They both have great ideas and they also do things differently than I would have (had I the mad skills they do). A team-up would have been magical!

Re: The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made mate

Yes, great work by both. For the most part, it seems like Scott Gammans used a "cleaner" 3rd season shot of the viewscreen. I suppose he chose looks over accuracy there, since the sensor ping sound effect didn't match the visuals.

But that's just nitpicking, which is not done here. ;)

Re: The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made mate

Both interesting takes on the material. Both mostly better than CBS's, but both with flaws. To my eye, Darren's sparking damage is overdone, and Scott's suffers from repeated breaks in directional continuity (ship angling screen right to left, then right to left, then left to right) and too much specularity on the ship. But, still, both cool.

Dang! Daren Dochterman's was nearly perfect. That's as close to what the Remastering SHOULD have been. Same shots, same views just made have greater resolution and a bit more detail. I loved how he matched the shots of the original show. What I didn't like is that the Constellation was just another copy and paste of the Enterprise model instead of reproducing the AMT model used for the Constellation. Also the Doomsday machine while it was one of the best I've seen it still was too far off for my taste.

I prefer Docherman's. Though I wonder why his Constellation bridge module looks intact? The Gammans' version looks overlit and the models looked far too white. Plus, I think that his space is over saturated with objects. Probably more realistic, but it just made the scenes look cluttered.

Great stuff guys! Keep them coming!
I'm going to focus now on the many models (both real and computer) of the USS Constellation and the Doomsday Machine.

First we have a 1/350 scale model VIDEO (bigger than the original) by Brad Hair.

Next we have a VIDEO of the closest I have seen to the original model. This one was created by JM Chladek.

This version is by Billy Lehner.

Re: The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made mate

Subtle details I would like to see:

1.) The Constellation was in the vicinity of the third planet when the planet was destroyed. Some nearby debris is good, but both artists used too many big chunks. A very faint "haze," like fog would have made a nice touch. Thus, the nearby star—shown in Gammans' renderings—could have thrown long shadows from the ships and debris.

2.) When Kirk maneuvers the Constellation, the original VFX showed a (cringeworthy) stuttering movement, and the interiors showed Kirk and Scotty tumbling around under the G-forces. One might assume that the inertial damping field of the ship was off-line. A CGI exterior shot might show wreckage from the damaged sections of the hull breaking off and tumbling away as the ship groans into motion.

Re: The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made mate

Both efforts are very well-done. Dochterman's is closer to the original shots; Gammans' uses more creative angles and backgrounds. I enjoyed them both.

Any way you could correct the spelling of Dochterman's name in the video?

Re: The DOOMSDAY MACHINE- Videos, stills, rare insights, fan made mate

and... DONE. Unfortunately I cant change my original post so here it is again with the corrected spelling. Thanks for pointing that out Doug :)
