Spoilers The Blacklist - Season 6 Discussion Thread

Ayn Rand's epic novel Atlas Shrugged begins with the words, Who is John Galt?

For The Blacklist, returning to NBC on Thursday, January 3, at 10:00 P.M. EST, the question should be, Who is Raymond Reddington?

A great deal of mystery, far more than has been the norm these past five seasons surrounds the man we've come to know as Red. Theories abound, and I'm sure that we'll go into them, from the plausible to the most outrageous.

Sounds like fun to me. If this is to be the final season (and I have reasons to believe this) then I hope it really delivers, the way the show did in the beginning.

Let the discussion begin!

Can't believe I've never come to threads for this, I love The Blacklist. The big Red is not Red reveal was a jawdropper, I'm very curious to see where things go now.

Saw the trailer for this. So he's not the father now.
They're just messing with us now. :)

For now, he's not the father. Later, we'll find whatever database was used was set up to reveal the skeleton's DNA as Red Reddington just to keep Spader's Red a mystery. He will turn out to really be her father in some way or other. Whether he is or not Liz's father, the series will still play out why he is so attached to her. I do hope they won't play out this antagonism too long because it throws Liz too far into the FBI characters' ballpark and, apart from Aram and Navabi, they just are not all that interesting compared to team Red. Also, I love Spader and Boone playing off each other so stories that prevent them being scene partners just hold less interest for me. Father/Daugther or Sith Lord/Padawan, they are fun to watch together.

I can't remember, did they say that Spader's character, who we thought was Red at the time, was her father or that Red was her father?

So far, the skeleton is supposed to be the real Red Reddington and Spader would seem to be an imposter. The DNA on record shows Liz is the daughter of Reddington. The question remains who is Spader's character? Is the skeleton really Red or will the lab results turn out to be a hoax? It seems unlikely on the surface of it that the results are a hoax but I wouldn't be surprised if Spader's Red was the real Red and the skeleton DNA is another layer of is he or isn't he Red/Liz's dad plot monkey business.

Yeah, I could definitely see it ending up to be a fakeout, but it's such a great twist that I would hate to see them undo it. Usually I would say that's such a huge shift in the whole premise of the show there's no way they'd stick to it, but after seeing shows like The Good Place that totally upend their whole premise on a regular basis, I'm not going to totally rule it out.

As bizarre as it sounds, I've come to the conclusion the theory that Spader's character is actually Katarina Rostova isn't that bizarre, at least in the context of the show. There certainly are enough clues and hints that have been dropped through the series that fit in with that notion, not the least of which is why the person we've come to know as Red has such an intense interest/concern in Lizzy's well-being, but there is such a disconnect with the other daughter.

I'm probably wrong, but I certainly would not be surprised if this turns out to be the final reveal. The whole premise of who Spader really is now is enough to keep me reeled in for the season.

That is an interesting idea, and wouldn't put something like that past them.

Katarina would be the most likely possibility if Spader isn't still the real Red. I don't see them introducing a new background character for Spader to be at this point though that is still possible.

Spader could still be Lizzie's father, if he had assumed the identity of the real Reddington (the guy in the suitcase) prior to the incident that resulted in the blood-stained shirt. This is also leaning heavily on the 'twin' theory, that two identical Spaders created the persona of Raymond Reddington, and then one of them got killed and ended up stuffed into a suitcase, leaving the other brother to continue on as the individual the world knew as Raymond Reddington, fathering Liz in the process. In this scenario, Dead Red would've been Jennifer's father.

While the twin theory explains how so many people from all walks of life recognize Spader as being Red, what it doesn't explain is why Constantine let him live after he whispered in his ear. The Katerina theory does, even though that theory has its own set of problems.

Also to consider, in the flashbacks with young Kaplan, it certainly appeared that she met the 'real' Red around the time she came to be in his employment. There's pieces to the chronology I can't seem to fit into place just yet. Does anyone remember how long Cooper and Red have known each other?

I can't remember, did they say that Spader's character, who we thought was Red at the time, was her father or that Red was her father?

The DNA they had on file of the real Reddington was used to match with Liz. Early in the show's run, Liz had DNA from not-Red to test but she never went through with it.

Also, looks like NBC already has their Blacklist successor lined up. :p

Interesting opening episode, with a few telling clues. The fact that Hans only worked on faces is perhaps indicative of the fact that this is NOT a sex-changed Katarina, but indeed a man who has had his facial features changed so that he would LOOK like the late Raymond Reddington.

The final scene with the two of them on the bench also indicated to me that despite her mistrust and the fact she now knows that this man is not her father, Liz still seems to harbor at the least feelings of concern - if not some fondness for the man who has protected her and shown her nothing but kindness - even if he is harboring secrets from her.

Yeah, that was a pretty good premiere. Does anyone know why Christopher Lambert talks the way he does now? He sounded the same when he was on NCIS:LA a few years ago, but I don't remember him sounding that way in the Highlander stuff.
Tying Hans into how not-Red took over the real Red's identity was a nice way to connect back to the arc.
Liz getting Red arrested was a nice twist at the end. I wonder if he'll actually stay in prison for a while or if he'll end up needing to be freed after a few episodes?
It will definitely be an interesting season with Liz plotting against Red, and Red trying to find out who betrayed him, not realizing it's her.

I wonder when Liz is going to notice how much her sister is pushing her buttons on this. I'm guessing she will catch the worst of Red's inevitable ire if not Liz scapegoating her for pushing her when she was having second thoughts.

A pretty good episode last night, I was surprised how much they actually dealt with (not)Red's deal. They also made some pretty big political statements there that I was not expecting.
The twist with the doctor's assistant sabotaging his work was a nice twist. So I wonder what the doctor is researching for (not)Red? I'm assuming it'll probably tie back into how he took over Red's identity.

I've always thought Red was training Liz up to take over his empire. If he turned out to by dying of something that could be what he had the doctor working on while he's training Liz to take over.

I am also wondering what the point of the sister is. I wouldn't be shocked to find Red in prison was worked up between him and Liz to gaslight her and discover something in her and Garvey's past.

I liked this week's episode, the stuff with Red in jail was pretty good. The guy giving him trouble lying to get in jail and hide out was a cool little twist. I can't help but wonder what the kid did to end up in jail, it seems like whenever we get a story like this and the character bonds with someone who seems innocent and nice, ends up being a total psychopath.
The Pawnbrokers were pretty good villains of the week. I had completely forgotten that Samar worked for Mossad and not the FBI. I can't remember, where did her brain damage come from?

Just have a feeling the Judge of the trial will be how he gets out of this somehow. DMV guy lol you're down to the D-Team if you're relying on him to save the day
