That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Signers?

I just peeped this o'ver at CNN:
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/12/14/people.johnnydepp.ap/index.html
Who is the best celebrity autograph signer? (Turns out, it's Johnny Depp)

A brief overview of the worst signers:
"Will Ferrell is deemed the worst celebrity signer, followed by Tobey Maguire, Joaquin Phoenix, William Shatner, Renee Zellweger, John Malkovich, Julie Andrews, Bruce Willis, Teri Hatcher and Scarlett Johansson."

So I'm guessing some of you have had the chance to meet the Shat, chat with the chat and asked for an autograph.

Is he really one of the worst?? Has anyone cornered him, asked him what it felt like to fight the Gorn on Cestus III and have him spit on your shoes?

Re: That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Sign

I've heard stories about him. I do think that it was pointed out to him at some point that his attitude was less than optimal when it came to autographing as his behavior seems to have changed in that regard.

I saw him at Vulkon a few years ago. He made a point to make eye contact with every person whose picture he signed and exchanged several quick words with various people, including my daughter.

Bear in mind that someone like Shatner ends up at conventions with so many autographs to do and x amount of time in which to do them.

So I had no complaints with my treatment.

Now Nimoy on the other hand, never looked up at anyone. He did say "you're welcome" to my automatic "thank you" after receiving my autograph.

Again, I think it's more time constraints than crankiness. Although some actors aren't as friendly/personable or approachable as others.

He signed my 1st edition of his biography. Of course, it was because one of his daughters got him to do it, as I repaired her Mac when she was in FL. Frankly, I didn't believe he would do it, so I was pleasantly surprised when it came back to me signed, name spelled correctly even, and with a short thank you note.

It made me so happy, his was the only autograph from the classic Trek actors I didn't have.

CNN is to be commended in discovering a method of name-dropping Tobey Maguire, William Shatner, and Julie Andrews in the same sentence. :vulcan:

Ms. William Shatner Jr... fascinating! And you fixed her computer! Them's bragging rights for sure.
To say that you fixed "Captain Kirk's daughters' computer."
Cool story.

Re: That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Sign

When I read the title of this thread, I just thought that Shatner had really bad hand writing. When I read the first post, I didn't click the link, and I just assumed that Johnny Depp had the best cursive skills.

If it is true that Shatner wasn't great about signing autographs, but after hearing about it he improved in this regard, then hats off to him. It says alot about someone being willing to take some constructive critisism, and change for the better.

Re: That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Sign

I recall seeing Shatner at San Diego Comic Con years ago, shortly after they moved to their current digs at the convention center on Harbor. He was appearing because, IIRC, Tek War had been turned into a Marvel comic. He refused to sign autographs during the panel (understandable since it would create a mob scene), but was quite gracious in signing something for a newlywed couple despite that.

Re: That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Sign

I was at a Voyager convention in Blackpool(UK) many years ago now, which was quite unique as it had most of the principle cast and guest actors (with the exception of Chakotay, Seven and Kes iirc, every other member of the main cast (including Kate Mulgrew) turned up.

Now, Kate was more than gracious to promise to sign an autograph for every single person in attendance at that convention on the first day, by Sunday night, I believe she signed 3000 autographs (one of which I have here at home :P) - Which is truly an achievement.

As for the rest of the actors, they were arranged so you met them all in a long line, in fact with some of the minor stars (Q's son and Vince Vaughn-Who was even kind enough to speak with me for a few minutes about Enterprise which had yet to air at that point) allowing chats for a few minutes, even Robert Duncan McNeil and Bob Picardo were nice people- most of the cast were with the exception of Tim Russ who declined to make any eye contact with anyone and didn't say a thing, which was quite rude considering every other cast member was going above and beyond the call of duty in terms of being courteous, I know it wasn't requested of him, but is a quick hello and bye really beyond some people?

As for Nimoy, I met him at an Expo convention here in London, and he was quite a nice guy who thanked me for coming and asked if I was having a good time-admittedly I was near the front of the queue and he had ALOT of people to sign, but I found him to be most gracious.

The only TOS cast member who was slightly pissed off was when my friend jokingly asked Walter Koenig to "Say Nuclear Wessels" XD

Re: That Shatner - One of the Worst Celebrity Autograph Sign

Nimoy was really nice when I met him, shook my hand and everything. He signed my first edition of I Am Not Spock and even asked me who to make it out to. He was great. Never have met Shatner, and I doubt I ever will, since I won't go to a Creation convention and I doubt there'll be any other opportunities.
