Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Books

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

it's probaly the usual mix of rumours, lies and poor cover art that's nothing more than placeholders...

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

Yeah, but at least the covers are occaisionally accurate.

I just checked the stuff out (mostly just out of curiosity) and as I figured most of the descriptions pretty much just tell us what we already knew. The only two that give us any kind of new information are The Never Ending Sacrifice, and Troublesome Minds. Oh, and I really hope that the covers for TNES and Losing the Peace are the real covers, because even as tiny black and white pictures they are awsome.

While it's true that the information in the catalogue is preliminary and often inaccurate, it's generated within the publishing company itself, so it's illogical to call it "rumors" or "lies." Especially since it's not meant for the general public in the first place, but is intended to give booksellers a general sense of what kind of content they're being offered.

Those who download the PDF files of the catalogues are well-advised to take everything they read or see with a grain of salt, to be sure. It's all tentative and subject to change, as the mantra goes. But inaccuracy doesn't mean lying. That's way too melodramatic an interpretation.

To judge by the description of Losing the Peace, the Borg are actually a form of Chinese dumpling. I think that tops even the Destiny origin story. ;)

^ Melodrama? On the Internet???? Say it ain't so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

Man, some of those books have untenable premises...

On the Trek front, I notice that the protagonist for Never Ending Sacrifice is given as Rugal, a Cardassian orphan. For some reason I thought we were going to have a female protagonist. (I am keeping in mind that these are placeholder decriptions, but this seems like rather precise information; unless the description is based off a preliminary outline and the lead has switched genders since).

Descriptions and covers for the following books are now online in Simon & Shuster 2009 Spring Catalog in PDF format:

For anyone who might be interested, that catalog also contains information on page 32 about my upcoming original supernatural thriller, The Calling (though nothing that can't already be found on my web site).

Like what?

Who is a character we saw on screen: a Cardassian orphan who was raised by Bajorans, but who was sent back to Cardassia in the unimaginatively titled second-season DS9 episode "Cardassians." Rugal was the son of a member of the Detapa Council named Kotan Pa'Dar, an enemy of Dukat's. (Pa'Dar also played a significant supporting role in the Terok Nor trilogy, particularly in James Swallow's opening volume.)

No, no... the Borg hate Chinese dumplings. The wreckage in the background of the cover image? Used to be the Peking Palace Buffet.

Agreed on TNES but Losing the Peace, awesome looking as it is from far away, is a pretty obvious bit of place holder up close (the fact that Riker, Troi and Data are on the cover is a big clue).

Still, added a few more books to my Amazon shopping list now.

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

Oh, I didn't notice they were on the cover. Never mind then.

Not the Trek books, some of the other titles in the catalogue. (Yes, I read through pretty much the whole thing... couldn't resist; it's like browsing a virtual bookshelf). The book about the coming fusion of the U.S., Mexico and Canada, for one.

^ Ah, okay.

Of course, the one that made go WTF the most was that silly one about angels and "the Scorned" and what-the-hell-else ever. I mean, c'mon, is that a ridiculous premise for a book or what? Then again, it's being written by that same loser who does the Kabuki comic book, so whaddaya expect?????

(Yes, I'm kidding, Dave. Put down the sword. Please?)

(And for those who may not realize, I'm taking the piss out of Dave Mack. In fact, The Calling will be a magnificent book that you all should buy several thousand copies of. You'll be glad you did.)

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

On page 100 there's also a mention of Greg Cox's upcoming 4400 novel Welcome to Promise City.

Yeah I'm sure Patrick Stewart wishes that he had the arms of the stand in they used on the cover art.

And was that Data on the cover for Losing the Peace?

I have to say too that the back cover for The Never Ending Sacrifice has me intrigued. I always wanted to know what became of that character.

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

The Never-Ending Sacrifice's cover is amazing looking. I hope the color version is released soon. Interesting to find out who the "person who isn't Garak" is.
