Tell us about your ship!

With so many ongoing fiction stories being posted about the ships Bluefin, Pugnacious, Cayuga, Ranger, and others, I thought it’d be nice if we had a bit of background about them.

Please post the Cast of Characters to go along with your fiction series. Give us a brief description of the ship itself and its mission.

Okay, I'll start with my ship. I'm still working on my fiction, but where's where I'm at:

Timeframe: TOS-era, set after the Second Federation-Romulan War (Balance Of Terror) and before the “war” with the Klingons (Errand Of Mercy), also before contact with the Gorn (Arena).

Location: Mid-way between the well-developed core around the Federation home worlds and the heavily defended border with the Klingon Empire. This “middle ring” region is still largely unexplored and thus is very much the Wild West.

Hero Ship: Federation Patrol Cutter “Yvonne Fletcher”, of the Federation Consolidated Law Enforcement Service, aka Space Police. This is one of about a half-dozen cutters assigned to the 32nd Precinct, Third District. The other ships have assigned patrol zones, whereas this ship is something a squadron leader and thus is free to roam anywhere it’s needed within the precinct.

The patrol cutter has a nominal crew of 100 personnel, but the Fletcher’s roster has been padded to bring it up to 120 crew members. The ship is armed with one Photon Torpedo and three single-turret Phasers, and it carries two ready shuttle-craft plus a third in storage. (I’m basing the ship off the police cutter in the game Star Fleet Battles, but I may decide to switch to a saucer design instead.)

Captain: Commander Robert James Patrick Weatherford. Human - male, 5’11” tall, age 37 years, 16 years in service. Robert is the fourth son of a British nobleman (the Earl of Horncastle). As with most non-heir aristocrats, he was encouraged to go into service “for King and Country”. Weatherford has had a well-rounded career, but this will be his first command of a ship.

Executive Officer (aka First Officer): Lieutenant Commander Dennis Albert Hammerstrom. Human - male (African decent), 6’4-1/2” tall, age 34 years, 12 years in service. Most of the Hammerstrom men (and many women) are in the Star Fleet Marine Corps, making Dennis something of a family black sheep.

Operations Officer (aka Second Officer): Lieutenant Tara Devon. Alpha Centaurian - female, 6’0” tall, age 32 years, 8 years in service. Devon just finished a tour of duty with the Inspector General’s officer, and was an Academy instructor before that.

Intelligence Officer: Lieutenant Yvonne Elsa Christensen. Human - female, 5’11” tall, age 26 years, 4 years in service. Christensen and Devon once served together on the Cutter Sam Franklin.

Chief Engineer: Lieutenant Brenda Sinclair. Human - female, 5’6” tall, age 36 years, 16 years in service. Sinclair is a mustang officer with six years prior-enlisted service.

Chief Medical Officer: Star Fleet Lieutenant / Doctor Preston James Winslow, III. Human - male, 5’10” tall, age 35 years, 9 years in service. Winslow’s family comes from “old money” so he can come across as somewhat snobbish. Beneath the cold exterior is a very caring person (think Charles Winchester on MASH). Winslow is married to Star Fleet Lieutenant-junior grade / Nurse Linda May Holliday (age 28); they have no children. Police Lieutenant-junior grade / Nurse David Scott Young (age 25) is the third medical officer on the ship; he is studying to qualify for medical school and become a doctor.

Science Officer: Star Fleet Lieutenant-junior grade Thane. Andorian - male, 5’8” tall, age 27 years, 3 years in service. Thane worked in a Star Fleet laboratory and wanted fieldwork. With no openings on Star Fleet ships, he took a crash-course in forensic sciences and volunteered for a cross-service assignment with the Police.

Civilian Scientists: Professors Dr. Timothy Paul Hoffman and Dr. Laci Tran. A husband-&-wife team, ages 42 & 39, on a mission to unlock one of the mysteries of the Federation: why are there so many terraformed planets, most now abandoned, across the region? The hope is if they can figure out a pattern to the distribution, it will allow the Federation to colonize the region easier.

Chief of the Boat: Senior Chief Stoan. Vulcan - male, 6’2” tall, age 68 years, 32 years in Police service. Stoan served in the Star Fleet Marines for 4 years before transferring to the Police. He is the ship’s Chief Master-at-Arms, the enlisted leader of the Tac-Teams (under the Tactical Officer, Lieutenant-junior grade Theodore "Ted" Alexander Flynn).

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Grun Morgoon. Tellarite - male, 5’4”, age 38 years, 16 years in service. Grun is a newly promoted Chief Petty Officer and is the enlisted leader of the Damage Control team, in charge of general maintenance of the ship. The officer assigned over him with Star Fleet Ensign Jason Littleton, a recent Academy graduate. Littleton’s father and grandfather are both retired Command Master Chiefs, so the young man has experience dealing with tough old birds like Morgoon.

I have a spreadsheet listing all 120 crew members, with names for most (but not all) of them. No, I do not plan on writing about all of them. During this era, Humans & near-humans dominate both Star Fleet and the Police Force. This ship is unusual in that is has a few each Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites, Rigelians, and even a few ethnic Orions onboard; thus one-fourth of the crew are non-Human.

The Untold Era: U.S.S. Ranger

Timeframe:
Things kick off in 2325, a little over 30 years since the launch of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B.

Location: The Outland Expanse, a lawless region of space in the Alpha Quadrant, bordering Federation space, the Tzenkethi Coalition and the unknown. It is a volatile and dangerous region, that the Border Service's Second Cutter Squadron must patrol in order to maintain some resemblance of peace and order, as well as lending aid to those in distress.

Hero Ship: The U.S.S. Ranger NCC-2254 is a repurposed Altair-Class (I've renamed the ship class as there are just too many Antares' out there) scout ship now serving as a border cutter. Launched in 2278, the Ranger had a number of assignments, all of which were successful though never something to hit the major news feeds, that was until 2285 when the ship vanished for a week. When she reappeared she was off course and adrift, the crew nowhere to be found. A full investigation turned up nothing and after a few minor repairs the ship was launched back into active service, though it was at this point some of the new crews began telling tales of seeing ghosts onboard. These rumours persisted and got to the point that no one was willing to serve on the ship for longer than a single tour, even then some asked for reassignment after only a few weeks or months.

Starfleet cut its losses in 2289 and gifted the ship to the Border Service, where she went through an extensive refit that made her far better suited to SAR-Ops, interdiction and patrol. Though the ghost stories persisted, with the lack of resources allocated to the Border Service the crew just got on with it, until the Ranger was retired from active service in 2315 and put on reserved status. Ten years later, intelligence reports the new Autarch of the Tzenkethi has his sights set on expanding into the Outland Expanse, as such Starfleet approved the bolstering of the Second Cutter Squadrons forces and reactivated a number of ships from the reserves to fill the gap.

The Ranger measures 222 meters in length, 104 meters wide, and 33 meters (or 9 decks) tall. She has a complement of 66, comprising of 12 officers, 29 non-coms and 25 enlisted crew. Eleven Federation Members are represented (though one of those is the United Rigel Worlds and Colonies, so there are actually 16 different species onboard), with humans making up a third of the crew. The ship carries two Type-IV shuttlecraft, is equipped with a pair of heavy tractor emitters, whilst her armament consists of one photon torpedo launcher and seven twin-mount type-VIII phaser banks.

Commanding Officer: Lt. Commander Xanthe "Xan" Palmer. Human (British), female. A former Starfleet science officer, her actions during (and following) a disastrous diplomatic mission brought her to the attention of the Border Service Commander who, impressed by her "gumption, grit and guts", offered her the chance of a command. Though she had always thought of herself first and foremost as a scientist, the challenges leadership placed upon her drew her in, so she made the (some might say foolhardy) decision to transfer to the Border Service. [Casting: Felicity Jones]

First Officer: Lieutenant Taras. Pandrilite, male. His race may be new to the Federation, but he always knew he wanted to serve and as a part of the Border Service. A behemoth of a man, he is over two meters tall and powerfully built, giving him an intimidating and menacing appearance, though he is a gentle giant--unless his ship or shipmates are threatened. With a fierce loyalty to the Service and a great sense of pride in what it stands for and what it does, he now finds himself as the bridge between it as his new former Fleet CO. [Casting: Daniel Cudmore]

Second Officer: Lieutenant Rafael De Souza. Human (Portuguese), male. He joined Starfleet with ideas of being the next James T. Kirk, not realising that he was decades too late for his idols "cowboy" ways, which saw him turfed to the Border Service, leaving him with a sizeable chip on his shoulder. [Casting: Sisley Dias]

Chief Engineering Officer: Lieutenant Oka Saygen. Alkarian, female. Another of the newest Federation Members, she joined Starfleet for the adventure of it all. Quick-thinking and at her best when faced with difficult problems to solve, she risks career suicide by sticking with her friend, Commander Palmer, and the transfer to the Border Service. As an engineer, she isn't someone who pads her estimates--if she says something will take two hours, it will take two hours. [Casting: Anne Hathaway]

Chief Tactical Officer: Lieutenant (j.g.) D9 "Dina" Blue. Nasat, female. From an insectoid race often called "skittish", she has gone against the grain of her borderline xenophobic people and joined the Border Service. She may come across as quiet and distant, but she is highly observant with a sharp tactical mind. [Voiced: TBD]

Chief Operations Officer: Lieutenant (j.g.) Narr glasch Aal. Tellarite (Dros), male. Born into a high-achieving family on a colony world, he was seen very much as the runt of the litter which has left a lasting mark on his character, though has made him humble despite his considerable intellect. [Casting: TBD]

Chief of the Boat: Chief Petty Officer Noah "Buffer" Lien. Human (Vietnamese-American), male. He earned his nickname by being the buffer between his ship and trouble. A solid all-rounder, he can turn his hand to pretty much anything in order the get the job done, and is known for being a hard taskmaster with rookie enlisted, getting them up to speed as quickly as possible knowing full well that the fate of the ship could depend on the lowliest crewman. [Casting: Dustin Nguyen]

Chief Helmsman: Petty Officer 1st Class Cian O'Shaughnessy. Human (Irish), male. He volunteered to join Commander Palmer in her transfer to the Border Service, having an uncle who was already a Border Dog and keen for the challenge. A man of charm and charisma, he also has a mischievous side and is always one to help bolster morale at the exact right time. [Casting: TBD]

Ship's Corpsman: Petty Officer 1st Class Kenara Vaal. Rigellian-Tomal, male. One of the 'vulcanoid' Rigellians, his display of emotions can be unnerving for those not in the know. A skilled medic, at home as much in the field as he is in sickbay, he has saved many lives over his career. On a personal note, he keeps his past to himself even to those who count him as a friend. [Casting: TBD]

Chief Navigator: Petty Officer 2nd Class Aila. Deltan, female. Stunningly beautiful, with a smile that lights up a room, she is someone who everyone likes, whether due to her looks or her optimistic outlook on things--though both can often blind people to the gifted navigator, cartographer and mathematician she is. [Casting: Danai Gurira]

Security Team Leader: Petty Officer 2nd Class Karyme "Kari" Hamid. Human (Boomer), female. Her family have spent the last 150 years in space, so Earth to her is just another world. Born and raised on a Monarch-Class freighter, she knows the hardships and perils civilians face in space on a daily basis, so she joined the Border Service in order to keep her family, and those like them, safe. [Casting: Sofia Boutella]

Note: So far these are just the initial concept blurbs for some of the characters, so I've yet to fully flesh them out--though often this comes out when I get to writing them, so some of them might go though some significant changes (I've already done so for De Souza).

I've written stories for a few ships out there. Which one should I share? Hmm.... This is a tough decision.

One? You're not limited to just one. Which one have you posted the most about recently??

USS Hippogriff is a Nez Perce class (variant on Acula class). Currently one of three ships operating about of Starbase 25 which comprise Task Force Enoch in 2320 CE near Kzinti space.

Captain Vor Arthoon is a Gaabrox, first of her felinoid species to reach such a rank in Starfleet. She (all Gaabrox are called "she" because that is how they appear--but roughly half are functionally hermaphroditic) was among the first of her people to join Starfleet. They have no homeworld but are scattered. She herself is single, and won a reputation for thinking "outside the box" and seeing a whole picture on many levels. Once someone joked she likes to play 3D chess on a 2D board, sometimes using checkers. She is one of a "new wave" of officers who attended the Academy after the Klingon War and the Praxis Incident, those with a bit less instant awe for the four founders of the Federation. Was previously First Officer of USS El Dorado, a Miranda class.
Lieutenant Commander Alexandra Styles is Chief Tactical Officer as well as Exec. Her father was the first Captain of USS Excelsior, and her family has been Starfleet for generations. Resembles her mother, with copper hair and piercing eyes. Having grown up in Starfleet she understands it down to her bones, holding herself up to a very high standard and is a bit suspicious of her CO. Thinks in many ways like a military officer, and handles her duties superbly. Graduated top of her class at the Academy, with a Lt. (JG) commission. Her best friend is a Vulcan classmate, Lt. (SG) T'zekk, currently assigned USS Crozier.
Lieutenant (SG) Fleur Abeti is Chief Engineer, one of those who oversaw the construction of the Nez Perce class in general and the Hippogriff in particular. Born in the United States of Africa. She frankly feels a little out of place in Starfleet, but concentrates and works hard on the 'military' aspects of the job. Her superior officers have little but praise for her. Until very recently she had no combat experience.
Commander Savek is a Vulcan Healer over 100 years old who agreed to transfer to Starfleet to help with expansion of Starfleet in the early 24th century. Thinks of humans as promising primitives, and sees little reason to be more than courteous to strangers rather than thoughtful. He regards all his current crewmates as strangers as yet. He has no interest in being part of any command structure in Starfleet, but does not hesitate to give general advice to any who ask for it and many who do not. He functions as Chief Medical Officer on board the Hippogriff.

Hero Ship: USS Bluefin NCC-4458 Albacore-class Border Cutter

(Lt Carter's Skipjack-class is the inspiration for the Albacore-class.)

The Albacore-class is the backbone of the Border Service. These ships are fast, durable and well-armed. They are also compact and cramped. Their impulse engines provide a power to mass ratio second only to the Defiant-class, which can make operating an Albacore a challenge for a new helmsman. Maximum warp speed in 9.2. Developed in the late 23rd century, 22 ships were built in the class, receiving major refits in the 2340's. By May of 2377, only 14 are still in active service, the others having been retired, destroyed or sold. The Bluefin was launched in 2301.
Specs: 390,000 metric tons, Length: 144 meters, Height: 40 meters, Width: 69 meters, Decks: 8, Crew: 120, Evacuation limit: 300, Type VIII phaser turrets, Twin forward/single aft torpedo launchers (60 x Mark 22 "Rat Trap" torpedoes, 45 Photon torpedoes), Maximum speed: Warp 9 (uprated models), Smallcraft: 2 Star Stallions / 2 Workbees

Timeframe: Most of the Bluefin tales take place in 2376-2378, although there are a few stories from other years.

Location: The Seventh Border Service Squadron based at Star Station Echo near the Molari Badlands. This region borders Klingon and Orion space.

Commanding Officer: Captain Joseph Barabbas Akinola, Human male of Nigerian descent, born and raised on the freighter, Eku, until his parents and uncle were killed when he was 12. Akinola and his little sister spent the next six years on Earth until he joined the Border Service. He worked his way up through the ranks, and was awarded a field commission to Lieutenant during the first war with the Cardassians. He has served on the USS Albacore and USS Bluefin. He's in his 60's.

Executive Officer: Following the Death of Dale McBride, Commander Inga Strauss became XO of the Bluefin at age 30, following her time on USS Thunderchild, where she served as Tactical Officer. Of Germanic heritage, Strauss is blond, petite, and a bit socially awkward. Due to the horrific losses from the Dominion War, she was promoted rapidly. Her perkiness and lack of experience are a contrast with her veteran C.O.

Operations Officer: Lt. Commander T'Ser, a Vulcan female in her mid 30's, was born on Earth. Her father was a professor, her mother a diplomat. She followed the path of V'Tosh Ka'tur, embracing both logic and emotion. Tall and slender, she is highly intelligent and a close friend of Strauss. She still grieves over the death of former XO, Dale McBride, with whom she had a romantic relationship.

Chief Engineer: Lt. Commander Maonkarv Gav Gralt is a Tellarite male, roughly 70 standard years of age. He's course and argumentative, and knows how to curse in 23 languages. He's a top-flight engineer and has served with Captain Akinola for many years.

Chief Medical Officer: Lt. Octavius Castille, M.D., a brilliant but prickly surgeon, age 38, he replaced the late Dr. Calvin Baxter. Castille is originally from Cuba on Earth, but grew up on Rigel IV following the death of his father. Formerly a staff surgeon on the USS Magellan, Castille managed to ostracize the CMO and was transferred to the Border Service.

Chief of the Boat: Senior Chief Solly Brin, is a Red Orion male, originally from Verex III. His mother managed to get him away from that hellish planet when he was a child. He enlisted in the Border Service at 18 and served alongside Akinola when he was still a non-com. Brin is nearly 2 meters tall and is an expert in hand-to-hand combat. Easily the most intimidating member of the crew.

Other regulars: Lt. Nigel Bane, Lt. Delta Simms, Ensign Maya Vashtee, Ensign Bralus, and Chief Deryx.

Chief Helm/Tactical Officer: Lieutenant Sean Pasko, Human Male, a man of faith

Chief Security Officer: Lieutenant Ntannu, Ktarian Male

USS Pugnacious NCC-487, Cerberus-class Patrol Cutter, aka “The Pug”
w/ Type F Shuttlecrafts Rascal and Mongrel

https://www.deviantart.com/mr-wistan/art/USS-Cerberus-3-773086835

Notes on the Cerberus-class by its designer, Mr-Wistan: "The Cerberus is a dinky little thing, only 80 metres long and with a saucer diameter of 41.2 metres. Six decks in total. It's a border patrol ship. It's old, it's worn out, it's the exact opposite of a prestige assignment. The crew are people who are either just barely good enough to stay in Starfleet, or who have seriously annoyed a senior Admiral in some way."
Pugnacious is in her 91st year in my story line. At some point, the third warp nacelle was removed to add a dedicated tractor beam/torpedo pod beneath her. (Cerberus was a mythological three-headed dog, a good name for a ship class with three warp nacelles.) The ship has two sets of twin phaser cannons, and the aforementioned torpedo launcher. She lacks many amenities - no ready room, no rec facilities, and a hangar deck where two Type F shuttles barely fit. Originally intended as a scout ship, she quickly fell into disfavor due to her cramped quarters and was relegated to border duties. where the class handled short-range missions quite well.

Timeframe: Mid 2320's

Location: The Seventh Border Service Squadron based at Star Station Echo near the Molari Badlands. This region borders Klingon and Orion space.

Commanding Officer: Lt. Commander January Sylvest
(Jan to her friends) was born on Mars (Olympic City). 35 years of age. She has an older sister, April, and her mother is still on Mars. Her father was an ore miner. He left the family when January was only 8 and she has not seen him since. Sylvest was an average student and wanted nothing more to get away from a bad family situation. Her mother was a chronic complainer and seldom encouraged her two daughters. January left Mars to attend the Border Service Academy in New London, Connecticut, on Earth. She worked hard and graduated in the middle of her class.

Executive Officer: Lt. Pasqal
Denobulan male, 41 standard years of age. Like most of his race, Pasqal is gregarious and curious. He's intrigued with Human culture - food and colloquialims are of great interest. He is quite happy in his role and has no ambition for advancement. Well-liked by the crew, he has an excellent relationship with Sylvest and serves as her conscience and sounding board.

Chief Engineer: Lt. Zora Arkus Duntov is a native of Brussels, old Belgium, EU on Earth. Duntov is quite brilliant but tends to be arrogant and opinionated. He received two degrees in Engineering from the Technology Institute of Europe. On a lark, he applied to and was accepted by Starfleet Academy. He excelled academically, but received numerous demerits for his poor attitude. His first posting was at the Advanced Starship Design Bureau, but numerous run-ins with colleagues and near insubordination with higher-ups saw him close to being discharged. Realizing he was about to ruin his career, he followed a friend's advice and sought a transfer to the Border Service. The transfer request was approved and he was assigned to Fifth Squadron, serving as an assistant engineer on USS Cam Rahn Bay. The Chief Engineer, a crusty Tellarite, helped turn his attitude around, also teaching him that theory was fine, but there were some tricks of the trade he needed to learn. Still, he struggled with his attitude toward others on the ship. He was passed over for promotion, several times, seemingly stuck as a Lieutenant. His Chief Engineer recommended him for the Chief Engineer billet on Pugnacious, warning him this was his last chance to make something of himself or get out of the Border Service.

Chief Operations Officer: Lt. (j.g.) Heath "Sparky" Tatum, age 28, was born and raised on Armstrong City, Luna. He was fascinated with technology from an early age, but had a predilection for pranks and trouble. After facing a magistrate for petty vandalism (his third time) he was given a choice . . . juvenile detention or service. Since he did not meet the “character test” for Starfleet, he went to the Border Service Recruit Training Center on Mars. To his surprise, he enjoyed the physical and mental challenge of basic training and thrived. He moved up quickly as an enlisted man, then applied for Officer Training. He was accepted and again, excelled in the training and course work. With his time in as an enlisted man, he graduated Officer Training as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade), and was assigned to USS Pugnacious as Operations Officer. He gained the nickname, “Sparky,” because of his fearless (reckless) ability to work on live control panels under stressful conditions.

Assistant Operations Officer: Engisn T'Las, age 24, Vulcan female, from Shikahr, Vulcan. Reserved but with a stubborn streak, T'Las went against her parents' wishes and joined the Border Service. She saw it as an opportunity to serve other beings in a tangible manner. T'Las prefers her own company and has yet to integrate socially with the crew.

Chief of the Boat: CPO Relek Torv Torsk, Tellarite Male, 67 standard years. Torsk is by far the oldest crew member with the longest time in service. Crusty but wise, he helps guide enlisted crew and junior officers alike with both counsel and contempt. He has a background in ordinance and usually leads boarding parties.

Certified Nurse Practioner/Paramedic – Petty Officer 1C Maggie Hayes, Human Female, 26, Vancouver, Earth. The Pug is too small to rate a medical doctor, so Hayes handles medical emergencies. She's very adept as a nurse and paramedic but tends to be reckless, taking unnecessary risks and frequently earning the ire of Chief Torsk.

Security Specialist – Petty Officer 1C Tej I'nar, Green Orion Female, 24, Verex III. An attractive, vivacious woman who has a visceral hatred of pirates and slavers. She never knew her parents and was sold into slavery at a very early age. During the rebellion on Jairos III, she escaped along with several other slaves, making her way to Federation territory. Tough and "street-smart," she eventually joined the Border Service. Her specialties include weapons, tactics, and hand-to-hand combat.

Helm/Pilot – Lt. (j.g.) Olan Kel – Deltan Male, 25. Tall with broad shoulders, he is quiet and unassuming. Always calm in the midst of a crisis. Like other Deltans in Starfleet or the Border Service, he has taken a vow of celibacy.

Engineering Officer - Ensign Maonkarv Gav Gralt, Tellarite male, age 20. Yes, this is the same Gralt who will one day serve as Chief Engineer on the USS Bluefin. Here, he is serving temporarily on the Pug, having missed boarding the Albacore before it shipped out. Fresh out of the Academy, he brings skill but little confidence to this billet. Chief Torsk takes an interest in the young officer, seeking to mold both a Border Dog and true Tellarite out of the youngster.

Chief Communications Officer: Lieutenant Malli Akuna, Human Female.

Star Trek: Flight of the Challenger

Timeframe: post-NEM (how “post” it is I haven’t determined yet, but ballpark 20-30 years).

Location: mainly Free Stars Alliance space (called Gateway Sector by Starfleet, to the galactic east-southeast of Romulan space (if you have the Star Trek Star Charts book, the FSA is in the Beta Quadrant, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way [pg 9]). The FSA is accessible by a one-way subspace feature called the Corridor; the Corridor was created by a warp core rigged with trilithium to act as a bomb that dissipated the Nexus Ribbon. The Corridor follows the path the Ribbon had taken and flows very quickly towards the galactic east-southeast, ending near the Celvanos system. Travel out takes about three days, but a return trip has to use quantum slipstream and takes a few weeks.

Hero Ship: USS Challenger NCC 86128, Pellucidar-class strike cruiser. While the name "Challenger" has a long and storied naval history, this ship is named for the ill-fated Space Shuttle. There is a memorial to the shuttle and its crew positioned in the saucer to allow an unobstructed view of space. The class is named for Edgar Rice Burrough's mythical kingdom at the center of the earth.

Commanding Officer: Captain Gabriel Frost, human (more or less) male. Born in Caer Bannog, Scotland, but lived most of his formative years aboard Destiny’s Moon, his parents’ tramp freighter (old Miranda-class). A figure of prophecy to the Celvani (important race in the FSA), to them he is “Tiosa Starforger, O’ho’ulho Third Traveller.” Skilled starship designer and engineer, forced into the center chair due to machinations at the highest levels of the Unified Command.

First Officer: Commander Connie Taylor (aka Nagase Ayuko), human female. Born in Makehiro, Japan (a small town several miles south of Kyoto). Starforce officer and Challenger plank owner; seconded to Starfleet when Challenger was given to Starfleet and assigned to Gateway Sector.

Chief Operations Officer/Second Officer: Lieutenant Commander K’Kon, K’Krothan male. K’Krothans are an insectoid species resembling mantises. The first K is pronounced “Ch” due to their physiology. K’Krothans are dedicated and straightforward beings.

Operations Officer: Lieutenant Rio Duran (aka Riovantra Duran'dhal, goes by family name first in Japanese/Bajoran format), Celvani female. First Celvani to attend and graduate Starfleet Academy. Somewhat mousey and soft-spoken, but extremely competent officer.

Chief Astrometrics Officer: Lieutenant Nowar, Nalim (Nalim are hermaphroditic). S/he, like most of hir kind, see spacetime as a work of art. Nalim are thin and willowy, with dexterous hands that have two long fingers and thumbs on either side.

Chief Engineer: Commander R’riel, Tas-Bestonian male of the Leonine kith. He is an “old salt” who doesn’t want further promotion.

Chief Medical Officer: Lieutenant Commander Kayleigh Holliday, human female. She is a descendant of the famous “Doc” Holliday from Earth’s ancient West. Shares her ancestor's predilection for and tolerance to alcohol.

Chief Helm Officer: Lieutenant Mokul, a “Blue” Romulan. Loves Earth “surfer” culture, very informal but a peerless pilot.

Chief Tactical Officer: Lieutenant Erika Priest, female from the United States of Africa. Lt. Priest is also Challenger’s Starforce Liaison Officer.

Chief Security Officer: Lieutenant Commander D’negel, Tas-Bestonian male of the Sylvine kith. He is also secretly a Fleet Intelligence officer.

Security/Tactical Officer: Lieutenant Neth’ven Avallios, Celvani male on extended officer exchange with Starfleet. Avallios is Oathsworn to the Traveller, friend and confidant/advisor to Gabriel.

Head Counsellor: Lieutentant K’Kovr, K’Krothan female. Very insightful; basically addicted to tube grubs.

Counsellor: Lieutenant Lorien Ari, full Betazoid female. Connie’s best friend. Telepathically and psionically gifted.

Flight Operations (“Air Boss”): Kromm, Klingon male of house Kh’nan. He owes Gabriel a blood debt for his part in the death of Gabriel’s mother.

Commander Air Group (CAG): Lieutenant Commander Dallas Parrino (callsign “Cherry Bomb”), human female. Hottest fighter jockey this side of Betelgeuse, CO of Challenger’s small fighter complement. A few of the other pilots:

· Lt. Mario Monterosso (callsign “Hitman”), human male from Sicily. Second in command of Challenger’s fighter complement.

· Lt. Bryson Cavanaugh (callsign “DaVinci”), ½ human ½ Betazoid male.

· Lt. Mustapha Ibrahim Bulsara (callsign “Mercury”), Parsi-Indian male.

Challenger has a special operations commando team aboard, the “Black Seven.” Among them:

· Major T’sera, Vulcan female, team commander.

· Sgt. Makto, half-Klingon male, heavy weapons specialist. Makto is Kromm’s bastard son (race of mother is unknown).

· Sgt. Kyu-Syubi, Orcanoch male, tracker (Orcanoch sort of resemble the “Gantu” character from Lilo and Stitch)

· Corporal Oromoqueva, Cohvli female (Cohvli are anthropomorphized penguins). She’s the demolitions specialist but also a brutal wetworks operative.

Chief of the Boat: Master Chief Devon Orobé, human male from Jamaica.

Some notes- in my stories, Starfleet has been broken into three branches: Starforce (primarily military operations, and the prestige assignment), Starfleet (mostly exploratory and usually looked down on), and Starguard (sorta like the Coast Guard, basically assigned to patrol within planetary systems but no further). These operate under the aegis of the Unified Command. Most Starfleet ships have a Starforce “liaison officer” aboard; think the political officers of the old Soviet navy.

The Romulan Empire fractured after the death of Shinzon, which led to a civil war that spread through the Alpha Quadrant as the Decade Wars, eventually splitting into three factions: the Romulan Star Empire, or “Red” Romulans, hostile to the UFP; the Imperial Romulan State, or “Green” Romulans, cordial to the UFP but not allied; and a small nation of Romulan ex-pats, the “Blue” Romulans, a UFP protectorate.

Other important characters:

Fleet Admiral Robert “Phaser Pants” Durham, CIC Unified Command, human male. Hero of the Dominion War and the Decade Wars.

Rear Admiral Mary Catherine MacAllister, commanding officer of the Gateway Sector Expeditionary Command (GSEC) to which Challenger is assigned. Her headquarters is Gateway Station in orbit of the planet Celvanos.

Ensign Lynch, Adm. MacAllister’s aide de camp. It is a N’chy’l, a genderless race with a gestalt consciousness; they reproduce by “psycho-mitosis” and all appear as a mid 40’s human male (this is why most Starfleet ships seem to have an “Ensign Lynch”)

(This is just a fraction of the stuff I have.. I have pages and pages of characters, planets, and races :) though I realized while typing this up that Challenger doesn't actually have a chief science officer, LOL )

Ship: USS Akula, NCC-1090. ( http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/perimeteraction_akula.jpg ) A perimeter action ship stationed at Outpost Neris near the Federation-Klingon border.

Timeframe: 2288, between the events of STV and STVI

CO: Lcdr. Amelia Mariko Tsuchida. Started her career as an enlisted Starfleet crew-person, and was given a "battlefield" promotion after distinguising hersef in action aboard the perimeter action ship USS Powell in an engagement with the Kzin. After attending Officer Candidate School, she was assigned back to the perimeter action forces as helm officer aboard USS Kiaga, and then eventually worked her way up to become first CO of USS Akula upon it's entry into service.
[Casting: Sandra Oh]

Chief Medical Officer: Lieutenant Commander Kayleigh Holliday, human female. She is a descendant of the famous “Doc” Holliday from Earth’s ancient West.
Funny, I have a Nurse Holliday on my ship. If memory serves, I was thinking along the same lines, to make her a descendant of Doc Holliday. I changed my mind about that but kept the name.

Star Trek: Orion
Thought I'd do a plug for my other mini-series (nothing wrong with a little blatant self-promotion)

Timeframe: During the Dominion War, 2374-2375.

Location: Typically never far from the frontlines.

Hero Ship: The U.S.S. Orion NCC-3013 is an old (and I mean old) Constellation-Class ship, retired from service decades ago and stripped of all usable parts. However, as the Dominion War takes its toll on the Federation, Starfleet reactivates a number of old ships and presses them back into service in support roles. Brought up to basic operating standards, the ships of the so-called "zombie fleet" shuffle personnel and cargo from place to place, carry out salvage operations, and numerous other menial (but critical) jobs. Because of their limited functionality and low status, these ships are a dumping ground for retirees, rookies and reprobates, and the Orion is no different.

Commanding Officer: Captain Reihyn. Rigellian-Enex (Rigel IX), male. Barely 30 years old when he made Captain of the U.S.S. Kukri (due to heavy losses), when he lost his first command after only a few weeks he was given the options: demotion to First Officer or Captain of the Orion. Though upon seeing his ship he had doubts about his choice. Hard-working and a very hands on CO, he has great potential but is still young and inexperienced. [Casting: Matt Lanter]

First Officer: Lt. Commander Clarissa DuMont. Human, Female. Two and a half decades older than her new Captain, she is a competent enough officer, though lacks drive or ambition, as such this is her first time serving as XO. [Casting: Jane Seymour]

Second/Chief Operations Officer: Lieutenant Aleksander Jachim. Human (Polish), male. One of the few officers onboard without a black mark against his name, he was assigned to the Orion following the loss of his last ship, the U.S.S. Evanescence of which he was only one of a handful of survivors. With no other openings available, he was placed on the Orion, a posting he wanted off the moment he set foot on the old ship. [Casting: Mateusz Damiecki]

Chief Medical Officer: Lt. Commander Sioll Baxx. Bolian, male. Long-since retired, his commission was reactivated and he was pulled back into service. Though he may come off as a curmudgeon, he has a deep well of compassion and gives his all to those under his care. This isn't his first war, nor his first time serving on the Orion. [Casting: Ben Kingsley]

Chief Medical Officer: Lieutenant Yeema Ad'u. Arcadian, female. The Orion's new CMO following the loss of Doctor Baxx, she has a peaceful and calming presence. She requested the posting to honour Baxx, her former mentor. [Voiced: Shohreh Aghdashloo]

Chief Security/Tactical Officer: Lieutenant (j.g.) D'Kehra. Orion, female. Once a lieutenant commander, she was demoted following a classified mission that went very badly, leaving her with a bitterness towards Starfleet Marines. Appearing sultry and alluring, she is also deadly in combat and never one to be underestimated. [Casting: Rosario Dawson]

Chief Engineering Officer: Lieutenant (j.g.) Enan Lanali. Rigellian-Tomal (Rigel VI), female. Young, perky and optimistic, she looks barely old enough to be a first year cadet, but she is a technical genius who is responsible for getting the old starship working as well as it does. [Casting: Indiana Evans]

Ship's Counsellor: Lieutenant (j.g.) Myza. Benzite, female. A late addition to the crew, she was rescued from the remains of the U.S.S. Trial. With the work the Orion is carrying out and the stresses of the crew, soldiers and survivors they carry, Reihyn managed to get her reassigned. A former Conn Officer, she went back to the Academy to retrain after finding her initial career to be unfulfilling. [Casting: Rila Fukushima]

Chief Flight Control Officer: Ensign Mecell Koen. Bajoran, male. Fresh from Starfleet Academy, he graduated 347th out of 350 cadets. Shy and unsure of himself, he is still haunted by the rape and murder of his mother during the Occupation, and can, at times, be overwhelmed by the stress and strains of now finding himself serving in a war. [Casting: Tequan Richmond]

Chief of the Boat: Chief Petty Officer Diego Ramirez. Human, male. He went AWOL to join the Maquis and fight for the colonists in the Demilitarised Zone, but was caught just weeks before the Jem'Hadar slaughtered them, leaving him with nothing but anger and hatred towards the Cardassians and the Dominion, believing he had lost everyone he had cared about. He was given the option of an early release by serving on the Orion. [Casting: Nicholas Gonzalez]

Note: I think I've got all the main points covered, working from memory, but will double check the Orion folder on my external hard drive and amend where needed. After reading @TheLoneRedshirt wonderful new Tales of the U.S.S. Bluefin I'm tempted to dabble with the Orion once more, seeing as how they had eighteen months together and no doubt have many other stories to tell (but we'll see what happens).

Star Trek: Gibraltar

Timeframe: 2376, the immediate aftermath of the Dominion War. The Alpha and Beta Quadrants are in disarray following the most destructive war in the Federation’s history. The Cardassion Union is in ruins due to Dominion reprisals for their switching sides at the end of the war. The Jem’Hadar and Breen have laid waste dozens of planets and utilized biogenic weapons on others that have devastated their ecospheres. The Cardassian Union has been occupied, split into Federation, Klingon, and Romulan spheres of control. There are too few ships and crews to get the job done, but Starfleet is determined to try and prevent tens-of-millions of Cardassians from dying of starvation and disease.

Starfleet’s losses during the war have been terrible, necessitating quick promotions of more junior personnel to senior positions. Officers who may have never sought starship command have found themselves with that duty thrust upon them out of necessity.

Hero Ship: Refit Constitution-class USS Gibraltar.

Due to growing losses during the Dominion War, Starfleet began taking older classes of ships out mothballs and refitting them to conduct convoy escort and routine operations within Federation space. This freed up larger, more capable ships of the line to be sent to the front. However, the ninety-year old Gibraltar was listed as low-priority, and her refit was completed a few weeks after the end of the war. Given the horrendous losses of ships and personnel, Gibraltar and her resurrected brethren are badly needed to help with maintaining Federation security as well as assisting with the massive relief operation taking place in occupied Cardassian territory.

Commanding Officer: Captain Donald SandhurstA former engineering officer, he was promoted to first officer of the Venture during the war after the ship’s XO was killed in action. He’d hoped to take up a post at Utopia Planitia following the end of hostilities to supervise ship-building but was encouraged by a former commanding officer to accept a captaincy and command of the newly refit Gibraltar. Sandhurst reluctantly accepted, believing the needs of the service outweighed his own personal ambitions. Now he struggles with the awesome responsibility that comes with starship command as his ship and crew are thrust into situations that they’re ill-prepared to cope with.

Executive Officer: Lt. Commander Liana Ramirez – A veteran of many of the Dominon War’s most vicious battles as XO aboard the starship Tempest, Ramirez had hoped to take up a post as an admiral’s adjutant following the war. This, she felt, would be a stepping stone to her own command. Instead, she finds herself strong-armed into becoming First Officer aboard Gibraltar, being seconded to a captain Ramirez feels she has more experience than. To put it succinctly, she is not happy to be here.

Chief Security/Tactical Officer: Lieutenant Pava Lar’ragos – A member of the long-lived El Aurian species, Lar’ragos spent three harrowing centuries crossing the Delta Quadrant before making it to Federation space after his homeworld was assimilated by the Borg. He’s a survivor, a man with a dark past, but who’s loyalty to his former academy classmate Captain Sandhurst is total.

Chief Engineer: Lieutenant Ashok – A quiet, taciturn Bolian pacifist who helped oversee Gibraltar’s refit. He is not a miracle worker, but is instead a reliable, steady journeyman engineer. Already possessing deep-seated insecurities due to his estrangement from his genius-architect/engineer father, Ashok now finds himself under the command of a captain whose engineering prowess far outstrips his own.

Chief Medical Officer: Lieutenant JG Issara Taiee – A nurse practitioner rather than a doctor, Taiee is assigned to Gibraltar as CMO because there aren’t enough full-fledged physicians for every ship in the fleet. A determinedly positive person despite having served on the front lines during the war, she serves as healer, counselor, and chief morale officer aboard.

Chief Operations Officer: Lieutenant JG Olivia Juneau – A graduate from the bottom five percent of her academy class, the losses of the Dominion War are the only reason Juneau is still in uniform. She’s been passed from one command to another, foisted off on ships and posts of less renown due to her lackluster performance. Moody and unreliable, Juneau is well aware her posting to Gibraltar may be her last chance in Starfleet.

Chief Science Officer: Lt. Commander Elisto Plazzi – A university geology professor, Plazzi had been retired from Starfleet for two decades before being called up as a reservist and reluctantly returned to service during the war. Now he’s trying to do his best to get the job done and run out the clock, waiting for the reserves to be demobilized so that he can return to his wife, children and grandchildren.

Chief Flight Control Officer: Ensign Brett Lightner – A recent academy graduate, Lightner's class was pushed through in three years rather than the traditional four to fill gaps in personnel coverage owing to the war's losses. He graduated in the top ten percent of his academy class with dreams of being a figher pilot or helming an explorer on a deep-space assignment. Instead, Lightner’s found himself shunted off to a 90-year old ship with a brand new captain, and suspects that he’s been black-listed by Command due to his brother’s ties to the Maquis.
