Since news on the next season is starting to trickle in, I figure it's already time to start forming wild theories and speculations, baseless of otherwise ;)

(Supergirl and Krypto, but where's Streaky?)

What do we know so far:

An early upfront announcement for Season 3 has the most generic possible description of the show, but it mentions Cat Grant, maybe signaling more appearances next season?

Melissa mentioned that the Legion is coming, though she's not sure when.

Katie McGrath would like Jason Momoa to guest star.

And some bad news: Maggie won't be a regular next season.

So... who's in the pod? :D

Uh-oh. I hope that doesn't bode ill for her relationship with Alex. Hopefully she and Alex will stay together but we just won't focus on their relationship every week. Which could be good, because stories require conflict, and fewer Alex-Maggie stories means less need to manufacture problems between them.

...unless you're Joss Whedon (who seems morally opposed to happy relationships). He would find a way to doom that relationship in about five seconds. ;)

Like I said, stories are about conflict. Relationships that don't have problems aren't very dramatic. That's why I'm not crazy about TV series that center on romance -- because they have to keep manufacturing crisis after crisis to keep the relationship in turmoil. That's why Mon-El had to leave Earth just when he and Kara were in a happy place. That's why Felicity dumped Oliver just before their wedding. And it goes back to much earlier shows -- I remember noticing the pattern on Beauty and the Beast in the '80s and Lois and Clark in the '90s. Not breaking up the couples, so much (although B&tB did kill off its female lead in season 3), but keeping them from ever being happy and stable for long, or forcing them apart in various arbitrary ways. So there's nothing unique about Whedon's approach. (How many of Liv's boyfriends on iZombie have died now? I think there was actually a joke recently about how her new romantic interest was taking his life in his hands.)

I'm pretty sure we'll see Lex Luthor at some point.

I'd rather we didn't for a while. He's Superman's nemesis, and this is Supergirl's show. It might be nice to see a trip to Metropolis and meet Lois and Perry at some point, but I kinda like the idea that Lex's villainy is in the past, that Superman's put him away for a good long time. (Albeit with the understanding that in superhero universes, even a couple of years in jail is a hell of a long time for a supervillain.)

In terms of what I'd like to see in season 3, I've been thinking... Now that they've had Lynda Carter in a recurring role, they should do the same with Lindsay Wagner. I've felt for a while now that Melissa Benoist is a lot like Wagner, with the same kind of charm and warmth. And Supergirl's the top superheroine on TV today, just as Jaime Sommers was in her heyday. (Yeah, there was Wonder Woman, but for nearly 2/3 of its run, that show was trying its best to be a Bionic Woman knockoff.) So I'd really like to see Wagner and Benoist together. Or, heck, Wagner and Carter together.

The season's "Big Bad" is the New 52 Supergirl villain Reign, with casting for the role currently underway.

Added the bolded.

I was going to say it would be interesting to get a relatively new villain as the big bad instead of a familiar character... but then I realized that most of the big bads on this show have been new characters. Astra was created for the show. Non shared a name and a species with a Superman II character (who was added to the comics in 2007) but was otherwise completely different. Lillian Luthor as Lex and Lena's mother is an essentially new character; Lex's mother was named Arlene in pre-Crisis continuity and Letitia or Leticia afterward, although the DC Database says the current version has an aunt named Lillian. And Queen Rhea is a new character; in the comics, "Mon-El"'s (Lar Gand's) mother was named Marisa Gand. The only established comics villains in major recurring roles in Supergirl have been associates of the big bads -- Indigo for Non and Hank Henshaw for Lillian. (And Max Lord, though he turned out to be semi-good.)

I mentioned this in another threads but I hope they bring in a troublemaker character kind of like a Spike on Buffy. I don't know comic book lore to know who they could choose from but I kind of like the idea of bringing back that one women who was a radio host and could shoot lighting. I think she might be called Banshee but not certain. She would be a perfect fit on the show as a regular.
Also am I the only one who thinks they should make Lena Luthor in charge of the newspaper. To me the character kind of feels pointless right now. Supergirl doesn't need another friend but she could use a good boss with Kat gone and I asume James will also be gone because they really do seem like they are trying to get ride of the character.
Also does anyone know anything about Reign? Never heard of that one.

Jason

Since I pretty much stopped reading comics from the Big Two back before New 52 I'm not at all familiar with Reign. Skimming through her wiki page though, it seems like there's some potential for good story telling in the premise.

Seems to me the smart way to go with this is to start her off as a mindless weapon before bringing her around and breaking free from the purpose imposed upon her. I mean just having her be a less hideous version of Doomsday isn't really that interesting and we've already had a conniving Kryptonian villain plotting to conquer the world once already.

As for Maggie not being in the show as much: I like to take that as a sign that as someone else suggested, she's going to be more like Lyla. Indeed for a show like this I think it's important that they show two women in a committed long term relationship and not sacrifice it for the sake of a little soap opera drama.

Floriana Lima has had more exposure that's opening a few more doors.

I hate it when people I like become successful :D

It might be nice to see a trip to Metropolis

Yeah, it would be nice if Supergirl got out of National city a bit more often.

On that note, I'm also wondering on which Earth the bulk of this year's crossover is going to take place. Earth-1 seems obviously the easier choice because less people have to cross over, but most Earth-1 people haven't hopped over to another universe yet, could be interesting seeing that, maybe have them interact with their alternate selves, see alternate versions of Star City, Central City...

So, my money is on Lena being Reign.
She IS adopted and a genius!
