Super Nintendo (SNES) Discussion Thread

When I was 12 years old, I desperately wanted a Super Nintendo video game system. It was the hottest item on the market at the time, but with every birthday and Christmas my Mom kept saying she couldn't afford one. As the years passed, I would go to other kids' houses and play games on theirs, enjoying those experiences but still wishing I had one of my own.

Five years later, in 1997, my mother, younger sister Lauren, aunt and I were celebrating Christmas together like usual. After unwrapping most of the gifts that were under the tree, Mom pointed out a large one in the back. To my surprise, it had my name on it. She didn't say a word, and once I realized what it was, you could me screaming joyfully from a mile away. She said our extended family had all chipped in for it, and I clung to this like it was made of solid gold. Eventually, when I moved on to the N64, I gave the SNES to Lauren, and she kept it until it finally wore out. Put together, we probably got about ten years out of it, if not more. I still remember that special day, and not just for the gift itself, but how much my whole family must have sacrificed to make one teenager happy.

What are your memories of this system? Did you play it back in the day, have you just discovered it now, or was your first experience with it somewhere in between?

I got a SNES for Christmas '95, along with 5 games including Super Mario World. I was obsessed, and eventually found all 96 worlds without knowing players' guides were a thing. Eventually I got Mario-All Stars, which kept me busy for a long time.

My last SNES game was Kirby's Fun Pack (Kirby Superstar in the US), which I utterly adored.

Then I progressed to Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 was quite the leap.

Sega Genesis here. Was more into sports games and I was in my 20’s. My wife loved Sonic the Hedgehog.

Super Mario All-Stars is a truly great port, but playing The Lost Levels immediately helped me understand why the company originally refused to release it stateside - the difficulty level is through the frickin' roof! All I can say about that is "Thank God for infinite continues", because I died so many times it was completely ridiculous.

Same here, although not so much into sports games, but I loved the Genesis. It's funny, but I haven't really been brand loyal through the generations.

My first was the Atari 2600, then we moved on to the NES, then the Genesis, skipped a few generations until the Wii, PS3, PS4 and PS5. I keep wishing EA would bring back Road Rash.
