Spielberg is set to direct an adaptation of "Old Man’s War" based on John Scalzi’s bestselling sci-fi series. The film is currently in development, and since this is not up next for Spielberg, there’s obviously no word yet on casting.

Cautiously optimistic, mostly because there have been a couple other attempts to adapt Old Man's War over the years that fizzled. The first, a theatrical movie in talks around 2013 or so was abandoned after the Ender's Game movie failed to light the world on fire. Then Netflix acquired the rights, though that appeared to go nowhere as well. Hopefully with someone like Spielberg involved it gains traction this time around.

As it is, I've been meaning to dig out my copies of the novel and its sequels to prepare for the new novel being released in the series this fall.

I wish Spielberg would go back to doing historical political movies, as Lincoln and Bridge of Spies are awesome, and The Post is pretty solid, too. We've got enough sc-fi/UFO/alien invasion popcorn flicks, IMO.

That would almost certainly be worth a watch. Read the first novel years ago and don't remember if there were sequels or not.

Well, I enjoyed the novels, so I'm curious about this.

I do wonder if some of the novels might be better served as a limited series rather than film though.

To Old Man's War? Yeah, there's a whole novel series. The entire series consists of:
Old Man's War
The Ghost Brigades
The Last Colony
Zoe's Tale
The Human Division
The End of All Things
The Shattering Peace (forthcoming, release date September 2025)
You'd think The End of All Things would be the last one! Sheesh!
