Steve Alten's Megalodon Book Series

Has anyone ever read Steve Alten's Megalodon book series at all? I did briefly read one of the books in 2000 but it was only recently that I became interested in the series. I bought Megalodon: A Novel of Deep Terror (1997) last week and finished it in two days. From there I rapidly finished The Trench (1999) and Meg: Primal Waters (2004). I recently bought Meg: Hell's Aquarium (2009) and eagerly await the next book in the series.

The books deal with a remnant population of megaladon and other prehistoric marine life (Leedsichthys, Kronosaurus and Lipleurodon) living in modern times.

Granted there's some scientific innacuracy in the book but overall I've thought it to be an enjoyable series so far.

Hasn't there been discussion at various times of making this a film series? Or WAS it a film? AM I getting confused with some shitty SF Channel monster of the week movie?

There was going to be a feature film version in the works as far back as 1997, but unfortunately it never went into production. Hopefully someone else will make it some day now that Alten owns the rights again.

There are a couple of bad direct-to-DVD and SyFy movies that capitalize on the giant shark theme though.

In answer to the OP, Alten's book was a lot of fun, even though the prologue with a Megalodon eating a wading T-Rex was impossible since they never coexisted.

It never fails to impress me how truly bad that first clip is. Especially the guy at the end on the sea-doo thingy. I just keep thinking of "Dr. Shrinker" from the '70's.

That was the first thing I noticed. Alten's subsequent books in the series were also a lot of fun. I'm so far very pleased with Hell's Aquarium.

There's one slated for 2011...

I read the first book MEG. It was OK but it didn't interest me enough to pick up the rest of the books in the series.

I eagerly devoured each one (pun intended lol). There were scientific innaccuracies, but they were novels not paleontology texts. On another subject I liked his novel called "The Loch".

MEG is one of those books, like ENDER'S GAME or THE STAINLESS STEEL RAT, that always seems to be on the verge of being made into a movie.

Maybe one of these days . . . .
