Star Wars: Starfighter (2027)

At 2025 Star Wars Celebration Japan, Lucasfilm announced that the next film to hit theaters after the Mandolorian and Grogu is called Star Wars: Starfighter. Shawn Levy directs, Ryan Gosling stars, shooting starts this fall, and it’ll be out May 28, 2027.

It’s a standalone adventure that takes place a few years after the events of Episode 9. “This script is so good,” Gosling said. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure. There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this kind of story than Shawn.”
Levy clarified that it’s “not a prequel, not a sequel, but a new adventure” with “a collection of all new characters.”

Gosling and Levy were both surprise guests at the event, with Gosling’s mom even sharing an image of his bedsheets when he was five. They were of The Empire Strikes Back.

Seriously excited, especially because it is "a new adventure” with “a collection of all new characters.”

Going by the title I'm assuming it is starfighter pilot related.

Wonder, if it includes some things that was supposed to be in Patty Jenkins' Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie/series.
Rogue Squadron official description: “The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”

They say new characters, but I'm sure there will be someone there we know. Given it's about fighter pilots in the post-Rise of Skywalker era, I'd be very surprised if Poe doesn't at least have a cameo.

I think it's a safe assumption that this is what happened to the Parry Jenkin's 'Rogue Squadron' project, given the time period and subject matter.

I'm a little concerned about the release schedule since I thought they were shying away from the "one movie a year" pipeline of the ST era. I'd rather they take their time and not risk running into the same problems that led to Solo's box office disappointment.
I also wish they'd go back to the winter release window. Summer is always so crowded, and as someone that grew up with Star Wars being on the telly every Christmas, it just feels right.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it'll have starfighters, which were probably set to appear in Rogue Squadron . . .
Seriously though; given that that movie never made it out of development, there's not telling what was being tossed around, or even what would have even been kept or changed during production had Jenkins stayed on-board. We might someday get a better idea of the process once the inevitable 'Art of' book is released.
My early prediction: The actual movie will be "Okay. Not amazing, but fine."
Based on what, exactly? An animated title, a single sentence blurb, a director and one cast member?
It could be amazing, it could be terrible. Since they haven't actually made the thing yet, we'll just have to wait and see how the concept is executed.

Well, it's obviously a sequel, just not a direct sequel.

But when we were growing up, Star Wars was in the theaters in the summer.

I have conflicting feelings about that. On the one hand, it did turn into a nice tradition a decade ago getting a new Star Wars movie every December. On the other, December itself is a rather busy and hectic month for me these days, even with not seeing any movies in theatres that month anymore. The past three years I've ended up doing my Christmas shopping in November (before Black Friday). So a new Star Wars movie is a burden I don't need added to December.

Besides, May 2027 is the franchise's 50th anniversary, which stands to reason that month is going to be huge for Star Wars. Makes sense to release a new movie in theatres that month.

The director.
Is that all? 'Deadpool & Wolverine' was bloody fantastic for what it was; way better than it had any right to be and could easily have been an absolute train-wreck. So by that logic, 'Starfighter' seeming like a much more straight-forward concept should be excellent!
Obviously.
Then why bother making utterly pointless predictions? Yes, that's a rhetorical question.

I suppose they had to do something special for the 50th, but I'm just concerned that both of these movies feel like they're being a little rushed out the door.

But there is no concept revealed yet. “Something presumably to do with one or more starfighters, set after TROS” isn’t a concept yet, not until we have at least a vague idea of what the concept is.

And that’s presuming it happens, unlike other projects where a title card, an excited actor quote and a projected release date have been announced.

This one is actually in pre-production though and has a filming date. I don't think any of the others had a filming date.

A very good director, I'm definitely interested. I especially like that its taking place after Episode 9. I don't particularly care about Gosling either way, but besides that Starfighter is probably the most interesting of the upcoming movies, outside of maybe the Mandalorian one.

Meh. If there aren’t Jedi and Sith as the main attraction, I’m simply not interested.
