Spoilers Star Trek: Resurgence story thread

Basically, what the title says.

This is a thread to discuss Star Trek: Resurgence's story and not the gameplay, release, or other elements. You can discuss characters, story arcs, and the overall plot here as well as what you thought could have been done better or worse.

Overall, I felt the story was extremely well done and I appreciated it but I felt the story got a little long in the grand scheme of things and I kind of wonder if it wouldn't have been better to break up the storyline a bit more along episodic grounds like the classic Star Trek games.

The Scions of the Flame/T'Kon are great villains and all but it felt a bit too much like "phaser battle, phaser battle, phaser battle" by the middle of the story. I think it would have been better to get to know people a bit more on other missions then move on to the T'Kon as a big finale.

There's a lot of really interesting character beats that got drowned out in the big epic stuff, especially with such a well-developed cast.

It also suffers a bit too much from the "Telltale says your actions matter but they really don't." Even if you are a complete scumbag, you can't really change the story for example.

I love Jara, though, and really think she deserved a full game.

I never got that far in the story, because there just wasn't any interesting gameplay or exploration to engage in.

I thought it was a decent, if predictable story. I liked that it had A/B plots like episodes. Riker showing up was a nice surprise and brought to mind the first Lower Decks season finale.

Pretty much my position exactly.

I can't put my finger on the exact moment, but somewhere mid-game my brain just kind of went "Enough already".

It was fine. It was interesting. It just wasn't interesting enough for the time it took to tell. I found myself getting bored frequently. Which I'm not happy about, I really tried to engage with it honestly.

Eh, it's the only part of the game I had any interest in. I actually got annoyed with the shooting and gameplay sections.

I think if I were to summarize my opinion on the game, it is a game that is designed like FINAL JUDGEMENT but has a storyline designed for something like ELITE FORCE (except none of the fun Doom-esque gameplay). The game is extremely well-done for world-building and we have some interesting new races in the Hotari and Alydians but it jumps into the "big threat to the galaxy" too quickly and it would have benefited actually sticking around dealing with the new races and their real life problem of exploitation versus economic agreements.

For example, one of the funny elements is that Major Sarlit Arminta is constantly advocating dark "war is hell" solutions like cold blooded torture, mercy kills, and the ends justify the means sorts of solutions that would have been fine in Warhammer 40K or even Call of Duty but are a big contrast in a Star Trek video game. I feel like that would have been more interesting to explore but, well, we're moving too fast to really get into that sort of thing and all of the game's roads lead to Rome.

I feel like this game needed at least three endings: A Good Ending, A Bad Ending, and maybe a Inbetween. Since none of these are canon characters, you could throw that in like being court martialed for bad behavior.

I just finished it last night and thought the story was pretty great. I thought it was nice that rather than Borg yet again, that it was a pretty deep dive into Trek lore. Even despite the quirks, I felt it had been one of the best Trek games we've got in quite some time.

I do think the phaser battles were a little on the difficult side, particularly because sometimes it can be difficult to see the cues and be able to aim at the same time, and it doesn't always feel like the game was designed with those in mind. This feels especially true towards the end when you're in that vehicle trying to shoot at the drivers. I often didn't know exactly where the game wanted me to aim in that segment as the rotation was limited, which made it really confusing in the heat of the moment. I kept failing a few times without really understanding why as a result, and I think the game eventually gave me a pass.

The good is that it really felt, looked and sounded like a Star Trek game. Would have been fun as an extra if we could have had the option to explore the ship and its different decks.

Oh yeah, that's another thing. The framerate is fine while playing, but it really does vary greatly while in cutscenes, maybe something to do with the cinematic cameras . It was most noticeable when they were showing the big battle at the end with the different ships. It would actually lag behind and would be particularly jarring during scene transitions.

The QTE's didn't bother me, because they usually give you enough time to respond. Even in certain cases, if you don't respond in time, it doesn't punish you. Far more lenient than most QTEs. And then there are the things that aren't time-sensitive at all, but rather the game wanting you to go through specific motions.

I actually had way more issues with the one puzzle involving the lasers and tricorder, mostly because it was difficult to gauge where you were exactly in relation to the lasers.

Oh, yeah sorry about that. I know you wanted to mostly talk about the story. I think though the gameplay is intrinsically linked to the story in a way that makes it hard to talk about without discussing the gameplay.

I liked it enough to want a sequel, but I doubt that will happen.

I like Telltale style games and was a fan of their Walking Dead series of games. Resurgence was very engaging and I liked the sort of choices you could make. Engaging characters and plot line. Very immersive in the Trek universe, and I liked the time setting around the TNG movies and uniform styles etc.
