"The crew answers a distress call to find a colony trapped in Starfleet’s past." - TrekMovie.com

This episode started kind of annoying, but it got better when they found the Galileo. Nice references to the original series, even though I'm a little surprised they are going this deep for a kids show trying to bring in new younger viewers. I think the thing i love about prodigy most of all is it's heart, and this episode shows that it's heart is in the right place, even though they are kind of violating the prime directive. They aren't starfleet so maybe it doesn't matter. Still, I wonder if in Season 2 we are going to have any consequences for what the Protostar is doing now, kind of like how in Season 2 of Voyager, Voyager was building a negative reputation.

The action scenes were cool, and Murf is evolving. Maybe next week's episode will be about Murf's new form and we can get a plush doll out for the Holidays. Still one of Trek's biggest missed opportunities was not making Murf as cute and adorable as Baby Yoda.

New Enda-Prize!

Man, these aliens put the gangsters from Sigma Iotia II to shame. If you're going to adopt a culture, then nothing better than Starfleet!

Damn shame we won't be seeing an Eaglemoss version anytime soon.

Murf NOOOO!!!

That is one seriously huge mug of coffee. It's like, photon torpedo size! And, where the hell's mine?!

Frex.jpg

So Frex got picked up by an unidentified vessel? That's convenient. I'm guessing they're not Federation, or else there would be meaningful sharing of intel on the young adults.

Much better than the first two episodes this season (er, half-season) though there's still a critical issue with the episode that stops me from having full enjoyment.

I'll start with the negative first - the Federation cargo cult the kids discover makes absolutely no sense! In principle it's a great idea (particularly with how they get things confused over a century) but unless I'm misremembering things, Ensign Garrovick only lived a few months before passing away. Most of his equipment was stowed away in a ship with a toxic plasma leak other than his uniform and phaser. I can see how the natives were exposed to stories of the Federation, but how the heck did they come to know how 23rd Century Federation tech worked well enough to fly with the holo-controls???

That said, otherwise this was a highly enjoyable plot-focused episode which took the story in some unexpected directions. It was much more of an ensemble piece than a character-focused episode, but both Dal and Jankom Pog got some good development here, moving away from selfishness and insecurities and more towards Starfleet ideals. Once the natives got away from just doing TOS character impressions and became real people it was actually a pretty interesting take. While arguably this is a bit too early to do another nostalgia trip episode (Kobayashi wasn't that long ago) I think the effective third act more than made up for the initial pandering to fanservice.

Wait...if Ensign Garrovick crash-landed in the Galileo, what the heck were the locals living in? Was it just another random crashed Federation ship? Or was it something they built themselves to resemble a Starfleet vessel?

I think we're meant to assume that there was some sort of larger mission involved. But my guess is the reason they know everything is the ship's logs were inside whatever Garrovick brought from the Galileo.

So the cargo cult actually may have a fairly detailed knowledge of the Alpha Quadrant and Enterprise's adventures.

They had functional technology and videos explaining how to use 23rd century controls from what we saw.

I hadn't seen TOS in detail, so, I would have to know, how did the natives get their hands on any useful SF technology from back then and made duplicates?

EDIT: it seems they had access to some functional SF technology and logs - that could have also contained 'how to' manuals... or it could be that because SF tech is user friendly mostly, it wasn't too difficult for them to figure it out.

Plus, if they were able to build everything they have, it suggests they were able to cobble together a primitive replicator or molecular manufacturer of sorts... possibly 3D printer to do a lot of the grunt work and power it better methods of power generation.

It was the moment for me when the doctor mentioned to Dal that the ensign told them about the PD and how they realize they weren't ready for that type of contact... it was nice to see a species that at least understands these concepts but still try to live up to the ideal.

I'd say it was something they built themselves.
Depending on the level of technology they had before that encounter... and if they were going through various logs the ensign brought back... the logs could have also contained manuals and training guides on how to use the said technology...

Its been what... over 110 years since then? That's a lot of time

Another great episode but a quite difficult one to take seriously.

I loved how the computer adapted the Protostar bridge for a 23rd century user, in fact I’ve always felt it would have been logical for Picard to ask for something similar while sitting at the controls of La Sirena in the last episode of Picard season 1, however I wonder how these aliens, which manage to get wrong a lot of basic stuff, can pilot a starship (inside a cavern!).

Also, so Kirk lost Garrovick and the Galileo and never managed to find it? So sad. And Garrovick managed to deeply contaminate that primitive culture, totally changing it! And somehow he went back to the Galileo to record his log but never stopped it from poisoning the place, something that Jakom does in a few minutes.

Even with all these caveats and more I’m giving an 8, because it was fun. Really fun.
