Hey all.

Today they announced Star Trek Online MMORPG. The site has a few screenshots and some information on the game as well. Gameplay videos should be up in a few days.

I can't wait to become 'Engineer Bradacus"

Anyone else going to be playing?

Here is an excerpt from their website:

"Become part of Star Trek®: The Star Trek universe will appear for the first time in a massively multiplayer online game.

the Fire Caves of Bajor, from the mysterious Mutara Nebula to the unexplored voids of deep space, all will be represented
in stunning 3-D graphics. Immerse yourself in the future of the Trek universe as it moves into the 25th century: a time of
shifting alliances and new discoveries.

yeah, they've been "working" on this since 04'. I doubt we ever see it.

The only thing that will really make this game work is the development of strong "crews" that play together on a single ship. It would also be nice if they could figure out how to allow the formation of fleets, crews, and mission building tools that would allow for more interesting developments.

What happened to the Stargate game? Did it suffer the same transporter accident and end up as vapor?

Cryptics Chief Creative Officer:

"Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch."

So it sounds like they will be utilizing fleets and crews. Certainly many 'Away Team' missions I would assume.

I am only worried that they won't actually make the game with a Star Trek atmosphere. Much like what happened with 'Star Wars Galaxies' which was more like you were watching the star wars galaxy around you and you didn't feel immersed.

**Stargate worlds just released the first gameplay trailer.

**Stargate worlds is also allowing registration for beta at the moment.

Actually you'll see the gameplay trailer at the upcoming Star Trek Convention in Vegas! Unless the studio that is making the game goes under it will be coming to release soon.

**My post has a bad title - it should be 'Star Trek Online Re-Announced!' I had known about it earlier but it got shifted to another studio. Today was the official press release for the game and included were some screenshots from Cryptic (the new dev team).

The Stargate MMORPG looks like WoW with a stargate skin on it.

I really want the Star Trek MMORPG to be good.

Very much alive and well!

GateWorld even linked to some brand new video released today.

Aaaaaand here's a person who has no clue what he/she is talking about.

I thought Star Trek Online was all but dead after Perpetual shut down, and I wasn't very hopeful about this revived concept; but I have to admit, I'm pretty excited after seeing this new info and screens!

The newp ics are horrible. way to cartooney. Let it die already. We don'T need yet another carbon copy of 'city of heroes' only this time with Trek window dressing.

To be honest, some of those shots looked more like concept art to me rather than actual screens.

I love MMOs and I love Star Trek, so I'm really looking forward to learning more about this. :) I'll definitely be giving this a try as long as I can play a Vulcan. Right now they've only confirmed Klingons and Humans though, so here's to hoping!

My best friend's brother in law is working on this-it should be pretty cool, judging by some of the other things he's done. I plied him with booze on July 4th and got a bunch of stuff out of him. It will have some interesting ideas and innovations. Can't say more-if it got out it might get him in trouble. But they have some pretty unique ideas, including possible cross-platforming using a new methodology.

Yeah, but that doesn't exactly mean it will (see the preview on the TOS-RM S1 HD-DVD set). I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic, but I won't necessarily believe it will happen until it actually enters beta and more starts to pour out in form of a preview in some official channels (IGN, Gamespot, etc.) at the end of this year and beginning of '09.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/894/894459p1.html

IGN has an article on it. Not really a preview. The last paragraph made me lower my expectations of the game. I hope this isn't going to turn out like Star Wars Galaxies, where every other person is a Jedi, when there were only supposed to be a handful.

What's interesting is also Cryptic's take on the gameplay and how it differs from what Perpetual proposed. The Perpetual game would have let you play as a member on a starship that was also crewed by other players. That raised interesting questions as to how players would work together, or who would get to decide to open fire. If everyone gets a starship in the Cryptic game, though, does this mean that the space around Earth and other major planets is going to be swarming with starships all the time? And how much of the game will be dedicated to starships and starship combats? How much of the game will be focused on beaming down to explore alien worlds? Hopefully, Cryptic will answer these questions and more on August 10.
I really wanted to work as a part of a team larger team, with a captain and everything. Guilds could be ships, with people living on them, and once the guild outgrew the ship, they could have more than one, and there could be fleets of ships under one guild. The captain would tell the people working on the bridge what to do, like raising the shields and firing, while the crew could still do those things without orders from the captain if they feel their judgment is better than the captain's, but would have consequences like being kicked off and having to find another guild to join.

I'd like the players to have a choice. If you want to join a crew/guild then you have the option. But if you want to work your way up as a member of an NPC crew and become a captain then you have that option as well. Problem with guilds sometimes is guild politics and favoritism. Plus sometimes people just don't get along. I know that there is a tendency among the combat class to look down on the explorer class within MMOs.

I've been following the Perpetual development of this for several years and the original concept was that you were to be able to choose your species and if I recall correctly choose either the Federation or the Klingons. I remember the idea of of starting as a an Ensign and working your way up to Captain which makes a hell of a lot more sense to me.

Here's some good info on the old Perpetual Project:

Let's hope that Cryptic is sticking to this development gameplan and not starting from complete scratch as we could be waiting forever for this.

(Yes, I have the exact same post in Trek gaming)
