Star Trek Models

Greetings all. Im not sure if Im posting in the right section (apologies in advance) but I have a question for anyone who is familiar with various models (die cast, plastic, etc) of the TOS Enterprise. Its seems like there is not much of a range out there in terms of scale. You can get a 16 inch Polar or miniatures that are just a couple inches long and not much in between. I did stumble across this 11 inch snap together model but am leery about buying it without a review. Amazingly, I cannot find a single review anywhere! Here is the model:

Advice appreciated!

Also, meant to ask you - and anyone else out there - if they have ever bought a diorama like this: a beautifully rendered phaser attack on a klingon battle cruiser(I think). These are stills, which means Photoshop, probably. I was going to ask for a quote but wondered what you guys think?

The 11in. PL model is actually a very nice little kit and until the 1/350 scale TOS E was released the small PL 1/1000 scale TOS E was the most accurate model available.

I believe there is a 1/2500 scale kit available somewhere.

The familiar 1/650 scale TOS E originally made by AMT and now reissued by Polar Lights is possibly the most successful science fiction model kit ever released even though it suffers in terms of accuracy. Still there is a great deal of nostalgia associated with that kit given for many years it was the only model of the TOS E available and many, many Trek fans built at least one if not several of the kits.

Decades ago, there was a fanzine, "Starfleet Assembly Manual" (I have issue #1; I don't know if there were any others), that presented instructions for how to assemble the then-current revision of the AMT kit (i.e., just after they revised the nacelle attachment points and end caps, and the main sensor/deflector).

The current version of the old AMT kit has been revised to improve the kit. It's still far from accurate, but it is supposed to be a much better kit than before.

Shaw modified a recent PL/AMT kit to be more screen accurate and it was quite a bit of work.

What do you think about the Smithsonian's restoration of the grand old girl?

Been building a few of these snap together models recently. Not much of a modeler myself, not much of a craftsy person at all really, can barely paint a straight line. They come out well enough, but I find myself hankering to try the bigger, more substantial versions as soon as possible. Some of the AMT/Polar Light snap together ones look fine, but the decals you're supposed to put on the non pre-painted ones have a tendency to break for me and I just ended up painting them instead of using the decals.

Assuming you are looking for a build it yourself model kit? Polar Lights has released the TOS 1701 in a few scales.

1/600 is the classic old school AMT. the least accurate of the bunch.
1/1000 this is the common $20 kit. It's about 7-8" from bow to stern. A nice little kit with lots of available aftermarket detail parts. It also has parts to do all versions of the studio model. Not perfect, but nice.
1/2500 this is the little one. About 3" long. It typically comes packed in a 3 ship set.
1/350 this is the mother lode. The largest and most accurate consumer model kit out there. It includes photo etched brass detail parts and is really designed for the advanced modeler with the intent to light it. The photo etch brass includes parts to make the nacelle spinners.

Also Revell Germany made a bang up little kit that was 1/650. About 9-10" long.

The 1/1000 kit is 11 1/2" long, not 8.
The old AMT kit, which is usually quoted as 1/650, is really around 1/635. :)
And don't forget the 1/1600 scale AMT "spaceship set" with the E, plus the Klingon and Romulan ships.
The AMT/Ertl "cutaway" Enterprise (recently rereleased) is around 1/500.

Revell makes a 1/600 scale kit, but they seem to have designed it without actually looking at the original. It's shaped like the Enterprise, but it's horribly inaccurate.

Starcrafts makes a very nice little 1/1400 resin kit, which is the same scale as AMT/Ertl's Enterprise-D, so you can sit them side by side in scale. This is available at Federation Models (dot com)

I used to collet pens for warp nacelles. Lots of interesting plastic found shapes. Some ink pens have inserts that look like something from Dr. Shrinker.

Uh, the 11 foot model? I mean, if it were duplicated down to the micron in terms of dimensions, it's still using a different collection of atoms, right? Ergo, no model can ever be "accurate".

Rest of forum readers: "Thank you, Captain Pedantic! Bloody schmuck!" :nyah:
