Star Trek Legacy

Jean-Luc Picard

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I got this game cheap a few months ago and have just gotten around to playing it, but I really can't get along with it. The gameplay seems jagged and out of time and I'm struggling with the battle system - even the first level, with the fight against the three Romulan ships, is taking me forever and I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Any tips on how to get through it? Is the game good, and I'm just terrible at playing it, or are my problems common?

I haven't played it, but judging from the reactions I read when it came out, I'd say your problems are extremely common. It's just a really naff game.

I take it you got the PC version, so yeah its a mess, its basically a very lazy buggy port from the 360 version with nothing fixed.

Things you can do to improve it.

If you have a joypay or even a wired 360 joypad then use it, the game will become so much more playable with this.

Use one of the free fan made total conversion mods to make the game more playable and enjoyable.....might i suggest the Ultimate universe mod.

And that's about it I'm afraid.

I bought the game recently as well.

I'd like to point out that the Enterprise Era fighting is rather painful even in the 360 version. Once you get to a Kirk level, things feel better.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've completed the ENT stage of the game but now I have a new problem - even though I've moved onto the TOS era, the Enterprise is still the NX model. It won't let me sell it, but because it's nowhere near strong enough to hold up to the new enemies, it keeps getting destroyed and making me fail the mission. It's really frustrating.

:D I just picked this game up today for 7 bucks.
I guess if I can't get past the NX era as ^^ Jean-Luc Picard cannot, then it won't be a huge loss.

I had this installed on my PC a year ago and uninstalled it shortly thereafter... although the graphics were quite beautiful it simply made me want to play Bridge Commander that much more.

EDIT:
I'm stuck on Breakwater. I know it's only the second level of the game... :klingon:

Basically no matter what the station seems to explode anyway. I tried it and thought I was kicking ass, then the station exploded. I restarted in Ensign mode and yet again the station exploded. Am I supposed to beam over there as Archer and let someone punch me in the face?

 Someone help me with this cruel level! I wouldn't have a problem targeting and destroying the ships attacking the station... if the controls for targeting and maneuvering weren't like flying a blind cow through the eye of a needle.

I have to say... the beauty of this game makes up for the shortcomings so far. Considering it's four years old... the graphics look nice.

Anytime you see a ship attack the station, you should target that ship and fire off a few shots. You want to keep the enemy ships focused on you and a few shots at them will do it.

You can't really destroy one ship at a time. A little here, a little there...

Thanks, DrTikhon.
I finally beat that level thanks to your advice.

Well... I think I give up on this game. And I am a very forgiving gamer... my problems with the game are few but they are big issues.

I am not going to complain about the controls as most people do... they are wonky but if you just play the game long enough you'll get the hang of it.

First of all, the missions are not replayable. I've heard that they were too long, I didn't find that to be the case but I find it MADDENING that you can't go back and play a particular mission. ??? Why the hell would they not give you the option?? Plus you can only have one ongoing campaign at a time? WTF?

Second, You can only play Federation campaigns.

Third: Skirmish mode... okay I love skirmish mode, it's what makes Bridge Commander and Starfleet Command so replayable. But in Legacy you can't select particular enemy ships to engage and there is a very limited choice of systems to battle in. And you cannot select REPLAY!!!! After the battle there is a "main menu" button. If you select it, it will ask "Are you sure you want to exit?" But there is NO OTHER CHOICE! You can't do anything at that point but go back to the main menu. Jumpin' jackflap mustardshits, this is just inexcusable on the part of the programmers. I get enough of that shit running Vista.

*Sigh* I was wondering to myself... "I wonder how often I will play this game" when I was giving it a third try tonight when my box locked up. I was playing the Defiant ready to unleash on a Borg Sphere when the game locked up HARD (as if to save myself the trouble and answer my own question for me), couldn't even get my controller to allow me to access the Xbox console. I shut it off and thought to myself... I could sure go for some Bridge Commander tonight...

...maybe take the Mvam Galaxy out for a little D'Deridex destruction. :D

To PC users... are any of the issues I mentioned fixed on the PC version?

I have the game for PC as well, and it is truly a terrible game in terms of playability and quality. I understand the desired goal in theory, but I believe it fell far short of that goal in practicality. If anyone is reading this and considering the game, please, save your money.

^^ Yep.

I know that there are limited games of space battle in the Star Trek universe... and really it's surprising that there are that many. So whenever a title like this comes along I think all of us as Trek fans have to be a little forgiving so that we can enjoy the content.

Of course, average gamers will look at this title and just say, "what???"

Star Trek ship combat is slow (compared to Star Wars) and that's the way it should be. Honestly, I think the franchise that best represents Trek ship to ship combat must be the Starfleet Command series.... although my fave is Bridge Commander. I love how you can slow combat down to a crawl timewise to fix systems and allocate power in Starfleet Command.

In Legacy, you have to warp away from combat to fix systems....

Overall, this game is decent enough on xbox. I've heard nothing but bad things from the computer version but I've only got the xbox version and it's fine enough for me.

First thing, yes the missions can be simple and the game overall is very light. Outside of the story mode you can only do skirmishes. While the lack of mission selection doesn't bother me I can see how it would bother others. Considering I bought it used and paid only a little for it I'm not too dissatisfied with it.

The main thing you need to do in the game is keep repairing your ships. If you let any systems get bad enough the ship will become almost useless until you repair it. Thankfully you can repair all systems at the same time. It also helps a lot to manage your power levels. Sometimes you need all power to shields to stop from blowing up; but when you first initiate combat, all power to weapons is best.

Another thing I'd suggest is keeping all of your ships in a group until you get more adept with them. The warp system is a bit wonky with groups of ships because the instant one ship in the group starts combat, the rest will drop out of warp and travel at impulse to the area (which can lead to ships dropping out of warp long before they arrive). So it's best to drop them all out of warp shortly before you get near to an enemy and them travel to them at impulse.

Only other thing I can say is just keep repairing your ships. It's almost like an RTS in that you have to manage so many different things at once. Power levels, groups, repairing. On protection missions just make sure you piss off all of the enemies to the point where they ignore whatever you're protecting and just fight you instead. The only mission that I found difficult was the first TNG era mission where you have the Stargazer. God, believe me, getting that achievement for protecting the satellites while saving the planets was a pain.

At any rate, if anyone has the xbox version of this I'd love it if you could play me online. I can't find anyone to play with so I can get the multiplayer achievements :(

You've probably given up by now, but the only way to fix that bug is to install "Keys of Legacy" from the Legacy Mods site. It was supposedly fixed in the only official patch, but...wasn't.
It's as if Bethesda didn't even playtest the game after porting it from XBox.
Ugg. So much wasted potential with that game.

The graphics I saw for Legacy looked gorgeous, but I didn't end up buying it because I read the poor reviews. When will someone make another good Star Trek starship combat sim?

I picked it up on the cheap as well, some months ago and wondering if it could be as bad on the pc as people claimed. And it was. Sometimes I like games that others may not like if it offers something cool. I liked Shattered Universe because of all the Classic Trek stuff in it. But Legacy? Couldn't do shit with it. I don't think i even completed the training mission because the controls were such shit.

I enjoyed Starfleet Command back in the day and was looking forward to playing something that looked like the evolution of that style of play. Sadly, this wasn't it.

Ironically, there's a copy of SC3 at the local Half Price Books store near me.
Since I only paid about ten bucks for Legacy, I don't feel too bad tho.

I genuinely don't believe that Star Trek makes for great video gaming. 25th Anniversary, Judgment Rites and Final Unity are the only ones I've got on with.

I picked it up cheap myself recently at Best Buy.

I played it a couple of times and I gave up during the first Next Generation era game. Trying to save the star system with the asteroids is just too annoying. I tried it for an entire day and didn't beat it.

Star Flight and Star Control 2 did just fine at capturing the essence of Star Trek...better than most Trek games did. And these games are ancient by computer games standards. Both games have heavy exploration elements, the ability to proceed diplomatically and yes, some combat.

Both were early sandbox games and frankly I will never go back to the gamer hell that is linear gameplay.

If you've never played either, I believe both fall under "abandon ware" classification at this point...I recently downloaded Star Flight for the Genesis with a Genesis emulator....and it only re-enforced my desire to see a Trek game done in this style. The Genesis version was the best version graphically speaking.

I'd say it's more a case that franchised shows turned into games make for bad games. Star Trek games can be good (Elite Force and Bridge Commander are both good games), but developers can be lazy because they think the game will sell well just because it ties to a successful show or film. Devs who have a true love for the show and take time to make the game right, as Raven did with Elite Force, can do a good job.

However in another aspect you are right- the constant combat of STO feels at odds with the explorational nature of Star Trek. No game has ever managed to capture the mystery and exploration of Star Trek, except maybe the games you mentioned above.

The trouble with it is the developers don't have enough budget to make a decent game with, therefore it takes them a heck of a long time, the company ends up going bust and either the game is scrapped or a new developer takes over, to avoid this in recent years they've simply rushed out the game (in Legacy's case), thus not ironing out bugs and glitches that ruin the gameplay for everyone

Realistically, now we have the JJ-Verse going on, there should be a chance for a decent Star Trek game (i've played online, quite enjoyed it, but disagree with paying $15 a month, theres not that much to do yet)

If Paramount and CBS were willing then a decent games company could make a new series of Star Trek games, starting with a movie game (Yeah I know they usually suck, but still it would make money) and then perhaps some games based on the familiar "Star Trek Universe", perhaps making Legacy how it should have been, with gameplay from "25th Anniversary", "Elite Force", "Judgement Rites", "Bridge Commander" and even "Away Team" mixed in

I think Star Trek could be a great setting for a Bioware-style single-player, open-world RPG similar to Mass Effect, Kotor, Dragon Age etc. Trek has always been more about storytelling than action, and those games, made right, are wonderful vehicles for telling rich, layered stories in a videgame setting.

Those games are quite expensive to produce, however, and it remains to be seen whether Trek has a large enough fanbase to justify the budget.
