Star Trek Legacy Question

I recently tried installing this game on my PC and it didn't work for some reason. I had all the requirements, at least I thought I did. Another website I found listed only certain graphic cards would work for this game, and mine wasn't on the list (I have ATI Radeon 9200 SE AGP, which came with my PC). Could that have been the only problem? And is this game worth it?

Due to a unwavering time constraint the developers were unable to actually finish the game. Thus, many popular video cards went completely untested, and features never put in, etc, in a mad rush to get it "acceptable" for release. I do believe that the graphics card is the biggest issue... but as for if the game is worth it, some people say it is, many say it is not. The controls do not work well with the PC version, it feels like a crappy port of the 360 version, even if the actual porting was the other way around. You're also unable to remap the keys to try and fix the horrendous controls.

As well, combat is kind of simplistic, but it's hella fun if you can get it to run smoothly.

I'd say that if you have a 360, get it for 360. It works fine on that system and the controls are good.

If you can get it to work fine on your PC, it should be alright so long as you get a 360 controller, I think I know a few people who said the game is just fine with the right controller.

As for the story itself and stuff... pretty epic. If it weren't for the technical issues, control issues, and some simplistic combat issues I'd put Legacy up there with Armada and Elite Force in terms of quality Trek gaming.

As others have said, the 360 version isn't bad, especially since you can find it for pretty cheap out there. Not great, but worth playing through if you're a Trek fan.

The PC version, though, was notoriously buggy and had myriad problems. The graphics card issue had quite a few folks enraged at the time of release, IIRC.

Eh, I think the mods (Ultimate Universe) remedied some (if not many) of the problems that plagued the game. True, it's still not perfect, but I'm not a Borg drone, so I have no need for perfection. ;)

...or do I? :borg:

Anyway, that being said, I had the same exact problem with the game upon it's debut. My video card couldn't play it well at all, so I was pretty disappointed. But later on, when I bought I newer computer (and more advanced v-card), I was quite surprised to see it wasn't as bad as many had claimed.

Yep. The PC version is so buggy that my system, which can run Crysis on Medium settings, can't run Legacy on low settings without getting visual artifacts and poor performance. I run X-Plane 9 at very high settings and get flawless performance, but Legacy? None. It's slow, jerky, buggy and consumes massive resources and HD space for nothing.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a dozen times now, and it's still runs poorly.

I've only played through Legacy one time, never really had any desire to play through it again. It's quite the resource hog and the controls kind of suck. I prefer sticking with my Bridge Commander QB.

My boys and I have all played the 360 version. We give it a collective shrug of our shoulders. Not great, not terrible.

What about an original XBox Controller S? Would that work for Legacy on Vista?

I wonder if the OP has managed to get the game to play properly now.

I remember buying it on its debut on the PC, spending 3 months trying to get it to work on 4 different hardware setups and both patches and actually having to mess around with game config files (and adding a file called admirals.prf), even getting in contact with the dev guys at one point (as useful as a chocolate teapot), then giving up until a couple of months ago.

It runs perfectly now - i.e. it doesn't crash, but the mission design and AI is still ill conceived: Could I for the life of me disable the engines on those three drones in the ENT mission, or get the Stargazer and its compadres to tractor the phaser turrets? Shatner's phoning it in and a late 50s Avery Brooks trying to pull off a young Lieutenant Sisko just weren't doing it for me. And the way Janeway is overlooked is shameful.

Props to Stewart though - even given poor material, he still manages to deliver it with enough conviction to make you care about the game (for a while at least).

I ended up setting the game on Easy difficulty and just plowing through it as quickly as possible because I refuse to be beaten by a game as bad as that  As for anyone else having the infamous access violation errors or in-game problems, unless you're completely die-hard, I'd recommend trading it in, or using a light flame on the disc and moulding it into an attractive ashtray or something...

Yep. I tried to get it running again this week.
Just for the record, my system specs:

AMD Athlon X2 4400+
2 GB DDR800 RAM
nVidia GeForce 8500GT 512MB PCI-e 16x
320GB 7200 RPM HD
22" Acer LCD Flat Panel Monitor

The game on low resolution runs poorly. Even on low resolution it skips, jerks and the controls are very poor. I run the QB simulator and it's tedious and slow. Every other game I have screams at high and highest settings. This is just silly. I think the game's a total waste of money, and if you haven't got it for your PC, please don't buy it.
