Emperor. Exile. Secret agent. And… emperor again? Philippa Georgiou, once ruler of the Terran Empire, gets the chance to rebuild her regime in the Prime Universe in STAR TREK: DISCOVERY - DIE STANDING, my new novel from Gallery Books!

The book releases July 14. Solicitation copy is live now:

No one in the history of histories has lost more than Philippa Georgiou, ruler of the Terran Empire. Forced to take refuge in the Federation’s universe, she bides her time until Section 31, a rogue spy force within Starfleet, offers her a chance to work as their agent. She has no intention of serving under anyone else, of course; her only interest is escape.

But when a young Trill, Emony Dax, discovers a powerful interstellar menace, Georgiou recognizes it as a superweapon that escaped her grasp in her own universe. Escorted by a team sent by an untrusting Federation to watch over her, the emperor journeys to a region forbidden to travelers. But will what she finds there end the threat—or give “Agent Georgiou” the means to create her old empire anew?

Gallery Books? There's been a re-brand?

Well, yes and no. Since 2009, "Pocket Books" has just been the name for the mass-market paperback imprint of Gallery Books. It's the same publishing division, the same editorial staff, with the only difference being the format the books are released in. Since Trek novels are now being released in trade paperback format instead of MMPB, they get the Gallery label instead of Pocket.

Hmmm. I'd have thought Audrid would be the current Dax host...

And is this supposed to be set after Georgiou's inevitable return from 1000 years in the future?

Gotta pay more attention to the title pages and spine logos!

It bothers me that Memory Beta calls the Discovery novels "Pocket DIS" when in fact none of the Discovery novels have ever had the Pocket logo on them.

Oh. "Die Standing". At first I thought it was "Die Stranding" and hoped that Hideo Kojima didn't take notice.

The title has historical and thematic significance, among other trivial connections. And the section titles... let's just say fun was had.

We studied this matter a bit, as we specifically wanted Emony, whose position in the timeline was suggested on screen only by Jadzia's mention of McCoy.

In supplementary materials, the Encyclopedia gave a death date for Audrid but not Emony; in literature, "Lives of Dax" Emony story writer Michael Jan Friedman looks to have responded to that date by making Emony significantly older when she met McCoy. You'll see which direction we went, and why Emony was such a good fit for our novel.

Without going into too much detail this early on, John, can you tell us if this book will tie into David Mack’s Mirror Universe stories in any way?

What I mean is, although Mirror Georgiou is now stranded on the other side of the interdimensional-divide, did you try to reconcile what Mack did with Mirror Hoshi’s clone-descendants (Empress Sato II and III), and how Emperor Georgiou might’ve fit into that?

Back in early 2018, there seemed to be something of a consensus on the Lit-boards here that it might be possible to have Emperor Georgiou’s reign somehow taking place between the two recorded periods of Hoshi Sato II’s own regime (the 2240s, and then Sato II finally dying in 2268, and succeeded by Sato III).

Or, does your book simply do its own thing? Regardless, stoked to finally read this one.

Indeed too early for details of any kind, I’d think. It’s Super Bowl weekend yet, and the book comes out the day of baseball’s All-Star Game!

Someone online asked if there would be baseball elements in the book, as in Enterprise War. I can confirm there are not, but the game as it might be played in the Mirror Universe is interesting to imagine!

Emony Dax in another book that's really intriguing. It's made me more interested in the story that haves a character from ds9 in it.

Normally I would be all over this but I detest Georgiou.
That said if ever a writer was going to do a proper job on the mirror universe (ie.not a bizarre bdsm/slash ) it’s this Miller chappie.
