Amazon.com now has the prequel comic for STXI available for pre order.
The site lists Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Tim Jones and Mike Johnson as the writes, and also gives a brife synopsis:

The countdown to the motion picture event of 2009 begins here, in the exclusive comics prequel to STAR TREK, the upcoming blockbuster film from Paramount Pictures! JJ Abrams, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman present the origin of Nero, the mysterious Romulan who will ultimately threaten the survival of the entire universe. Don't miss this story that brings STAR TREK back to the big screen!

The comic is 104 pages long and will be out in April...

Re: Star Trek: Countdown

Hmm, I'm not usually big on movie tie-ins. I can't decide if it's worth the potential spoilers.

Well, I don't have to choose until April...

104 pages? Is that right? That's quite stout for a movie tie-in that doesn't even adapt the film. I wonder if they'll be bundling in some of their other Trek comics as a sampler, as DC and Marvel have done in the recent past with movie adaptations...

Re: "Star Trek" comic prequel coming January 2009

Awesome!

I'll gladly be handing over my cash; quality be damned!

Re: "Star Trek" comic prequel coming January 2009

(Sorry! Didn't notice the other thread!)
I've edited the thread title to make it a little more clear on the forum index. ;)

My link is soliciting the first issue. Looks like Amazon is soliciting the collected trade paperback.
Okay, I get it now. :techman:

I think it's probably still good to have the discussion contained in a single thread. That way, subsequent issues can also be mentioned here as they become available?

Re: "Star Trek" comic prequel coming January 2009

Cool! so the first issue is out in January!

Has there been any news on a novelization or movie tie-in novels?

There will be a novelization, but no author has been announced yet.

Pocket is also repackaging the "Crucible" trilogy ("McCoy", "Spock", "Kirk") by David R George III, as a very chunky hardcover omnibus, complete with a newly-written bonus section to incorporate some links to the new movie.

TrekMovie.com has some more details on this comic. Specifically:
TrekMovie.com said:
As revealed recently, the plot of the film involves Nero traveling back in time to the era before the Original Series. This Comic Book prequel, which is said to ‘take us right up to the movie,’ is primarily set in the time before Nero goes back in time, specifically the Next Generation era after Star Trek Nemesis. The main characters for the prequel will not be the young TOS crew but Nero and the elder Spock (and possibly familiar characters from the TNG era).
