I wanted to recommend two authors who, I think, are at the top when it comes to writing fanfics which focus on Spock, Sarek, Amanda, and facets of Vulcan society. I am also providing the link to the places where their works can be found. Both capture the characters and the culture, and I could probably write a small novel as to why I have enjoyed their work. Both have been in fandom pretty much since it’s inception. I think, unfortunately, many people don’t come across the older stories out there, so they can be easily missed. In the case of one of these authors, her work is not on any of the fanfic sites, so you wouldn’t know what to look for if you weren’t around TOS fandom in the 70’s and 80’s.

Firstly, Pat Foley. Prolific author with stories that start with Sarek and Amanda before Spock, then the raising of Spock, and then his time in Starfleet Academy and with Pike. (One of the best of her stories involves our triumvirate on Vulcan after Spock has been rescued from capture and torture.) If you are looking for something with everything from laugh out loud humor to very, very dark moments, then these stories are for you. They are not for you if you’re unable to separate Vulcan from human culture or if you are going to judge Vulcan society by 21st century, human beliefs and mores.

The second author is Leah Charifson (aka Leslye Lilker). She began a series in the 70’s featuring Spock’s son, Sahaj. As to how Spock came to have a son, that will be explained in her work. Spock does not learn of Sahaj’s existence until the boy is 10 and quite the hellion. Hilarity and tears ensue. Thoughts of “Please don’t even think of doing that, Sahaj” will run through your mind quite frequently. Her work can be found here:

Leah does not ask for a particular sum for her work, but it is not free. I believe she uses the funds to keep the website active.

Both authors are FanQ award winners.

Hope you enjoy, and I look forward to reading through the fanfics posted on TBBS.
