Sonic The Hedgehog (1993 SatAM ABC toon).

Now this was an excellent saturday morning animated show that appealed to kids and teens alike back in 1993. I was 12 that year and i loved this show cause when i was 11 in 1992 i got the Genesis with the sonic games as i loved them and became a fan.

This show was definitely superior to the inferior weekday afternoon "Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog" for it had a nice dark side to it in the mode of "Star Wars", "Blade Runner" and even "Aeon Flux" (the MTV toon). It's definitely DiC's greatest sensational toon since "Real Ghostbusters" and "COPS", it had humor with action, romance, good animation, adventure, feeling and of course there was that hot as hell alien squirrell redhead babe Princess Sally. Oh man, Sally use to give me that funny feeling in that place at the age of 12 yet i still think she's smokin' hot.

yeah, I got this on dvd last year and it made me wish that they would pick it up again for a second season

Mainly because she never wore pants... :D

Well this show ran for two seasons and i hear a rumored third season is in the works, that should rock.

This show was great! At the time I was a huge fan of the Sonic Genesis games and felt that the weekday "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" was horrible. Robotnik was a moron in that show and posed no real threat to anybody. On the Saturday morning version he was a truly evil guy who had already conquered most of the planet. That felt more like the video games to me. Too bad it didn't last longer. However, the comic book that began at about the same time the show premiered and featured the same characters is still going strong to this very day.

This was definitely the best Sonic cartoon ever made. I remember liking it because it was a bit darker and actually had a plot to it. Unlike that other garbage Sonic cartoon on at the time. I was bummed out when we never got a resolution to the cliff hanger. I'm surprised anybody else remembers this one. Cool thread!

Thanks Akirprise, i dunno why DiC would make two Sonic toons at the same time. It's kind of like that same thing back in 1986 with two different Ghostbusters cartoons at the same time one by Filmation and one by Dic/Columbia Television. You see back in 1985 when Columbia struck gold with Ghostbusters at the box-office, they wanted to turn the movie into a cartoon series that would run on saturday mornings on ABC and on syndication TV in the afternoons then they got sued by Filmation who made the original 70's live-action Ghost Busters show over the rights of the name. So the two companies made a deal for Filmation would make their Ghostbusters cartoon based on their 70's show called "The Original Ghostbusters" while DiC/Columbia would make "The Real" Ghostbusters.

Who else thinks Sally is still a fine piece of ace? I mean she's gorgeous, has a killer nude bod that would drive any adolescent boy back then nuts (ha ha ha) and a sexy voice to go with her brains. I mean 1993 was a nice year for fine toon women for me at age 12 with her, Callie from Swat Kats, Taarna from a Cinemax showing of Heavy Metal, and Minerva Mink.

I remember both liking this show but also hating some things about it. On the one hand, it was pretty dark and mature for a Sonic cartoon, with a gloomy dystopian Mobius where nature is constantly under threat. Robotnik was genuinely scary, and a competant villain. That showed that the writers made an effort to give the cartoon series it own identity. But at the same time, part of me felt like it had diverted a little too far from the look and feel of the games, and I disliked most of the new characters.

I actually kind of enjoyed the AoStH cartoon as well, despite its awfulness. Yes Robotnik was a buffoon but that was keeping with his character in the original games. Pity Sonic was a rampant ego-maniac.....

And yes, Princess Sally was beautiful. But whatever you do, DO NOT do a Google Image search of her - trust me on that!

actualy, both series were based off the archie comic books, about 25 issues in they switched formats to the darker story line and animation design, and ditched scratch & grounder

I remember reading somewhere that ABC wanted a Sonic cartoon for their Saturday morning lineup and DiC presented them with "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog". Apparently ABC wasn't pleased with the show and asked them to try again. That's when DiC came up with the show that ABC ended up airing. But I guess DiC decided to keep making their original show and sold it as a syndicated weekday series.

Speaking of Sonic cartoons, I never saw "Sonic Underground" or "Sonic X". Anybody else? How are they?

Sonic Underground is quite fair while Sonic X in it's uncut Japanese language version is excellent. Yes Sally did made furry fans so did Jenny from Bucky O Hare, Minerva Mink, Lola Bunny and Cleo from Heathcliff.

Uh, this thread really should have stayed in GTV&M... :p

Anyway, yeah, I remember this show very well. I had been reading the Sonic the Hedgehog comics that were published by Archie, and the Saturday morning cartoon had the same basic premise, although it was a bit darker (a choice that was later reflected in the comic too, I think). For a cartoon based on a video game character, it wasn't half-bad.

Yeah. I think someone saw "Sonic the Hedge..." and got trigger happy.

That said: fun show. I had the opportunity to watch the whole thing recently, after seeing a positive review of the series on the Nostalgia Critic's website. The first season was pretty rough, but the writing got a lot better once the second season started. It would have been nice to have another season or two, especially since the show was getting better.

I thought the second season was strong even with that brilliant final episode. Oh yes i forgot to mention, on the second season when i was 13 i had the hots for Lupe the wolf chick, i mean she was one smokin' wolf woman.

Ahem. Furries. Unless you mean this:

Why was this thread moved (it's about a cartoon!) but the inFamous, Space Quest, Force Unleashed, Left For Dead, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Metal Gear Solid 5, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto, Team Fortress 2, Modern Warfare 2 (should I go on?) threads weren't?
