So Worf can ear a sash, Troi can wear a catsuit but Ro....

Cant wear an earring?

Im making my through TNG DVD's and I've just noticed that for the first time. Is there any reason why the other two are acceptable and not the earring?

just looks like victimisation or some affirmative action bullshit to me...

If I were a cynic I would say that Betazed was a full Federation member and that the Klingons were a powerful empire allied with the Federation. Bajor was merely a Cardassian colony and nobody gave a sh** about them or their beliefs. :p

Troi had a "civilian position" on the ship. She was a counselor, it makes some sense that when she's talking with her patients she looks as comforting and on-level with them as possible and not like a commanding officer.

Anyway, the answer is simpler than that.

Worf and Troi were model officers who had earned respect through their ranks and thus earned the right for some lax in the dress code.

Ro wasn't a model officer. Letting her wear the ear-ring is just giving her a prize for being insubordinate and one step away from being court-martialed, thrown out, and put in whatever passes for a 24th Century prison sharing a room with Tom Paris. How do you get an officer like that in line? You don't give her an inch. You dress her down, make her stand at attention, and strictly follow the rules.

Wof and Troi EARNED the right to skirt around the dress code. Ro hadn't.

Probably some regulation intended to prevent people from accidentally ripping their ears off. Though Ensign Redshirt's explanation could also be the reason.

I assumed it was just Riker being a jerk to her, in combination with the "treat insubordinate harsher" thing.

Troi needed to look less informal in her role of counselor. As for Worf, I imagine he'd be ripping people's arms out of their sockets if they told him what he could and couldn't wear.

So Riker being an ass had nothing to do with it ?

I would feel a lot more comfortable if my counselor wore a uniform like my own...not a bunny suit with boobs-a-poppin' and a camel toe.

Glad it's not just me. I'd rather feel like I was talking to a professional instead of a civilian with a combadge. If ANYTHING, talking to a counselor who was the only officer on the goddamn ship who didn't wear a uniform would make me UNcomfortable. Yay for Jellico. And I always thought that Riker was just being a jerk to Ro, nothing more, nothing less.

Simple. The sash rams home the fact that Worf, as a Klingon, is different from the rest of the crew. Troi was supposed to be "the sexy one", so she was given an outfit that showed off her figure (even though she actually looked way better after she got her uniform in season 6). Ro, although cool, was a mere recurring character and less important, so she could be ordered to remove her jewellery as a plot point.

I wonder if this can also explain why Troi in Encounter at Farpoint actually did wear a uniform and then next episode got more lax with it. Kinda wish Troi had kept the Farpoint look actually.

^ Maybe Worf had a doctor's note - sash and back support in one to make up for the fact that they never gave him a damn chair.

Ro clearly shoulda done her homework and got a note from a Bajoran Kai about the oracle-like nature of the ear-ring ... or perhaps its more er...stimulating qualities. Woulda been enough to sway Riker. :D
