So why did Opaka want Molly to have her necklace?

at Quark's

Just rewatched S1 'battle lines'. Just before Opaka goes through the wormhole (never to return), she tells o'Brien (whom she's never seen before AFAIK) he has a little daughter and wants her to have her necklace.

But why? There isn't any follow up on this, I think . Is the goal of this scene only to show that she's so spiritual to the point she's somewhat psychic, and cares even for strangers she's never met, or what ? Or did the writers have something in mind when they wrote this ?

I just see it as her having received a vision from the Prophets we're not told about. Maybe she just wants to be some sort of fairy godmother.

Well she might have had an Orb experiance, the Orb of Prophecy and Chnage perhaps. Or it was to meant to set an example to others to be open to relations to the Federation as some elements didn't want the Federation there. Or it was simple nothing more than a gift.

Perhaps one of those visions showed Opaka how Miles' life on DS9 would be alike and decided the necklace would keep Molly safe

She knew that Molly would be thrown back in time two hundred years, come back ten years older, stab a guy, be thrown back in time again, this time on purpose, come back ten years younger, no harm no foul...

I haven't seen the ep in ages, but I would guess this is the reason... she had a vision and knew she wouldn't be returning. (Although there may be something in the ep that belies this that I've forgotten...)

These 2 characters compliment one another nicely. One is an elusive Bajoran guru who is about to reach the end of the line while the other is a young child with a future ahead of her. I'd like to think that Molly represents the Federation and Opaka is giving her approval for Starfleet's occupation of Terok Nor.

I think it was just because she knew she wasn't going to come back and saw an opportunity to use her possessions to make a little girl happy.

For all we knew, there was a prophecy about "The Kai who walked into the Celestial Temple and never returned..."

One of the novels (Lesser Evil I think) had O'Brien mention the necklace; I thought the author might be setting up something, but it hasn't been mentioned since.

Opaka said that she was sent by the prophets to that moon to help the people start their healing process or something like that.

It would have been nice to get an update on her progress before the end of the series but I guess it would have required more consistency and continuity than a ST writer is capable of...

^ Your comment is a little inaccurate as you don't know the writers intentions regarding the character. They might not have liked the character, the actress, or thought they didn't need to revisit the character... although Opaka did appear twice more in visions and orb experiences.

My comment is based on what Opaka said herself. If the writers choose to be incoherent, it's their failure not mine.

The writers just wanted to get rid of a Kai so they could have a political struggle to be the next one.

It definitely seems like in the future they should have been able to get her home.

It's kinda shocking that they didn't keep in touch with her, especially Kira.
