so what holosuites were used in Deep Space Nine anyway?

Holodecks pretty unlikely to me. Forcefields created instantly on the fly to simulate all sorts of solid or liquid objects.

Um, the same stuff as in TNG/VOY?

I thought TNG made it pretty clear that they were used for "sex stuff" as well, Riker's "I'll be in holodeck 4" is pretty much synonymous with Firefly's "I'll be in my bunk".

It's not particularly relevant, but I take every opportunity to point out that Quark's holosuites were shown to be far, far safer and more reliable than the holodecks on board the Federation flagship. :)

Perhaps holodecks on Starships are supposed to be faulty?

I mean, let's face it. Starfleet promises a life of glamorous discovery, but the reality probably is that most average Starfleet officers end up on ships like the USS Trashcan of the Garbage class, and their main responsibility probably is no more exciting than routine patrol to see whether some people are trying to get away with dumping toxic waste in deep space, or violating the Warp 5 speed limit.

Give such ships holodecks to provide the much needed diversion and relaxation. Give them frequently (and dangerously) malfunctioning holodecks to keep them on their toes.

^This reminds me of the times when I've suggested to my manager that we intentionally introduce errors into reports that my junior teammates were supposed to be working with, to see whether they'd notice.

Only trouble being that if they DO notice you might find yourself out of a job.

That would be why I was talking about it with my manager as a test for my teammates rather than just doing it on my own without telling anyone. :p

My math teacher in high school in fact always used that excuse whenever he made an error in a lengthy blackboard calculation . "Just checking if you guys were paying attention".

Except that holodeck malfunctions are often life-threatening. I'm not sure we actually want to kill crewmen as part of a test.

I had a computer science professor who made an error in a line of code fairly early in a snippet he was writing, and once he realized it, fixing it resulting in needed to rewrite multiple other lines. Oops!

Nah, no problem. No-one important ever dies, only redshirts.

(In other words, my response wasn't meant to be taken seriously in the first place.)

It seems that holo-decks went from a ground-breaking, never seen before technology that had everybody amazed in TNG season 1 to something commonplace and entirely ordinary by the time DS9 rolled around.
It's easy to speculate that a few improvements in safety were done between those two points in time :-P
