One of the stars of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is poised to return to the Hobbiton set in Matamata.
The cast for executive producer Peter Jackson's film, The Hobbit, has yet to be officially announced.
But British actor Sir Ian McKellen – best known for his role as Gandalf in the Rings sword and sorcery epic – said on his website that he would reprise the role of the grey-haired wizard and expected shooting to begin this June.

Ah well, glad to have him back. He was a hoot last time.

I'm pretty sure it was announced awhile ago that McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving were all definitely reprising their roles.

I'm still hoping that Christopher Lee will change his mind. He said sometime last year that he would love to reprise his role as Saruman but believes that he isn't healthy enough to make the trip to New Zealand.

There's no reason that some shooting, a scene or two, couldn't be done in the UK, especially if it's a scene of Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel gathering the White Council for a consult on the situation at Dol Guldur.

That's a fair point. Hopefully Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson can work out a compromise with Christopher Lee along those lines. Speaking of compromises, I hope del Toro went with is own suggestion of having Ian Holm narrate the film but have a younger actor play Bilbo.

Err, Saruman isn't in the Hobbit. Did I miss a memo or something?
You're correct that Saruman isn't in The Hobbit but the film will be utilizing information provided in The Return of the King apendices which covers events that occurred at the same time as The Hobbit. The appendices in particular cover what Gandalf was up to everytime he mysteriously disappeared from Thorin's expedition, including visiting Saruman and the rest of the White Council.

For that matter, they could shoot Lee on a greenscreen stage and composite him with the other actors, locations, etc.

That was the fourth age... after the age of man... the age of hobbit... where the shade of Saruman took over a hobbit...
You didn't read that book... I'm sure it's been out for come time now....

Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, WIZARD! YOU SHALL NOT PASS! Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian.....

As outlined in the Silmarillion, there was a hell of a lot going on elsewhere at the same time Bilbo and the dwarves were heading for the Lonely Mountain (which was why Gandalf had to leave them for a while.)

Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf, Saruman and several other peeps were involved in it.

Don't want to tell you more because of potential spoilers, but it does tie into events in LOTR, and we're assuming that "The Hobbit" film is going to go into some of the other stuff that was going on.

One of these days I hope someone tackles the Silmarillion. As big as the fights were in LOTR, they were piddling little skirmishes compared to some of the stuff that went on in past ages. I'd like to see Morgoth on screen once. :)

^Agreed. Sir Ian certainly made the role his. Seeing someone else fill those shoes - especially when Sir Ian is still more than capable of fitting into them - isn't easy to imagine.

More than anything else, I'm looking forward to seeing McKellan as Gandalf the GREY again. Don't get me wrong, he was great as Gandalf as a whole, but he was much better as Gandalf the Grey and I cannot wait to see him in that role again.

^^What the hologram with the scarf said! :D
