Wow, we really don't have a dedicated Silicon Valley thread?

Silicon Valley is an American television sitcom created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky. The series focuses on six young men who found a startup company in Silicon Valley. The series premiered on April 6, 2014, on HBO. The first season consisted of eight episodes. HBO renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on April 12, 2015. On April 13, 2015, HBO renewed Silicon Valley for a third season.

This is probably the best comedy show I've seen in years. Loaded with references only tech geeks will understand which could be a bit off-putting for some, plus, it's a Mike Judge show, and his sense of humour definitely isn't for everyone. Fans of 'Office Space' will know what I mean.

I don't have HBO so I am watching the first season now and really enjoying it. As a big King of the Hill fan, there are definitely undercurrents of humor that are common to both, even though the settings are totally different.

My main option to see it is Netflix discs, and the second disc is marked "very long wait," so who knows when I'll get to finish.

Christopher Evan Welch was my favorite part of season one. I was saddened by his death, but the show doesn't seem to be too terribly affected by it. It's still pretty funny. But his character, Peter Gregory, was my favorite part of the show. Bizarre, yet I could totally believe he was real.

Most characters are subtle caricatures, though. Especially Gavin Belson, Erlich Bachman and that Jared character. On the other hand, Richard and Monica are almost completely believable.

The focus group in the latest episode cracked me up. So funny.

"Did you also find the scene funny: Allen, Lisa, Josh, Yana, Katie, Ramón?"

This was a great episode, and the show has been hilarious.

Blaine giving that heartfelt apology in front of Dinesh and Gilfoyle's "Let Blaine Die?" SWOT board was the perfect mix of humor and tension; just waiting for him to inevitably turn around and notice what was written there. The stupid use of the diagram reminded me of the awesome Mean Jerk Time (NSFW) algorithm scene last season.

Someone over at AV Club freeze framed the SWOT scene and copied down most of the entries:

Erlich to Gilfoyle: “You look like a ferret that gave up six months ago.”

“Is this Windows Vista bad? It’s not iPhone 4 bad, is it? Fuck, don’t tell me this is Zune bad?”
“I’m sorry, Gavin, it’s Apple Maps bad.”

I like it, but It's not really a show I go out of my way to watch as far as appointment TV goes. In fact, I find several parts rather embarrassingly awkward. I know many were praising one particular scene in the season finale last year, which I actually fast-forwarded because I couldn't stand how awkward it was. I felt it had gone on too long, and had enough of a gist of what was going on.

My favorite scene was in season two episode 5 with the timeline delays getting progressively larger as you worked your way down the Hooli totem pole (each boss refusing to tell a higher-up how screwed-up things are).

I wouldn't call Silicon Valley an appointment show, if I miss an episode I just catch it on HBOGo the next day, but it happens to be right after Game of Thrones which is an appointment show, so as a consequence of that I never miss an episode.

Then I have to find something to do during Veep until Last Week Tonight comes on. ;)

I think my favorite scene is when Peter Gregory is carefully examining all the hamburgers for hours then comes up with a brilliant investment plan based on them.

Yeah, speaking of which, I do need to catch myself up on SV and Veep.

I don't have HBO. I caught the first three or four episodes which were being shown for free on an international flight last summer. I thought it was great.

"In some ways, billionaires are treated even worse than Jews in Nazi Germany!"
http://mashable.com/2015/04/26/silicon-valley-season-2-episode-3-recap/

In this case, Belson's ridiculous comments were pulled straight from real-life headlines: Thomas Perkins, billionaire and co-founder of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, made that exact comparison last year. (It's also worth noting that Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers is the firm that was involved in a high-profile gender discrimination lawsuit by former employee Ellen Pao, a case that riveted Silicon Valley.)
:vulcan:

This is what Perkins actually said:
Writing from the epicenter of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on the "one percent", namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the "rich".

It's amazing what people can get away with saying these days.

So he wasn't comparing the current %1 to the European Jews of the 1930s, he was really calling the modern day %99 percent Nazis.

Oh, I guess that makes it ok then. :D

This is what Gavin Belson actually said on the show:

"One can argue that billionaires are actually treated worse, and we didn't even do anything wrong,"

So basically, he (unknowingly?) implied that the Jews were (at least to a certain degree) responsible for what the Nazis had done to them.
