Shatner can't make the Vulcan hand sign

Until I came here, I'd never heard of anyone having trouble doing that. I had no idea some people are just not capable of it since it's always seemed so easy to me...as easy as giving the peace sign, middle finger, up yours, or any number of hand gestures that anyone can do.

I suppose it's like whistling. I can't whistle for the life of me, but many people seem to find it totally effortlessly easy. I was surprised to learn that even Zachary Quinto, the new Spock himself can't do the Vulcan hand sign and his fingers had to be glued for J.J. to get a shot of him doing it!

rewatched TWOK couple days ago and had noticed it in the engine room - had thought he was simply supposed to be overcome with grief.

I can't do it. I think it's genetic, having to do with the construction of the hand.

I believe there's a bit in ST3, when he asks McCoy "how many fingers am I holding up?", where it's shot so that the bottom part of Shat's fingers and back of his hand can't be seen, and it's taped into position.

I know plenty of people who can't do it, and others who do it wrong. We've known since star trek 2 that Shatner couldn't. And didn't they mention it in one of the DVD docs? I don't get what the big deal is. He didn't play a :vulcan:, so what does it matter?

Rubber band your fingers apart for several hours. I did that in 7th grade and the ability was permanent. You won't regret it.

Actually, Shatner has arthritis in both hands, which makes it hard for him to type. He uses a recording device to "write" his various projects.

This was evidenced when Jay Leno had him as a guest. The two of them each sat in a "command chair" and took turns telling jokes with spaceships appearing and flying by. If you look closely at their hands, Leno was doing pretend typing while Shatner was moving his hands up and down, which didn't aggravate the pain.

If you remember in The Search for Spock, Kirk gives the Vulcan salute while asking Bones, "How many fingers am I holding up?" For that scene, Shatner had to have his fingers held together by something behind his hand. I don't remember if it was wire or tape or something like that.

This isn't the only time a celebrity turned out not to be able in life as his character does. Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer on 24) has no idea how to use a computer and is always teased about that by his teenage daughter.

As I understand it, the ability to make the "Vulcan salute" is actually genetic. Some people are literally just born unable to do it.

Yeah you can either do it or you can't. I can do the eyebrow thing and I've found that the majority of people cannot do that. Whistling just takes some practice...just like burping on purpose. Used to be able to recite the alphabet via a burp. I'm quite proud of that LOL.

How cute are you that you rubber banded your fingers in the 7th grade. LOL!!! Is this crazy that I'm thinking of doing that???? I need help!!!

This is a very interesting fact that you're stating.

I guess my Jewish heritage allows me to do it. Until now, I did not know there was anyone who could not do it.

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

That's the first time I've heard of ghost writers being called "recording devices" lol.
QFT!

GAH! same! i actually got in trouble once in kindergarten for whistling in class... my excuse that i couldn't whistle fell on deaf ears. now i'm about to graduate (tomorrow, in fact), and i would so love to go back to that teacher be like, "I STILL can't whistle!!"

anyways... that was a little OT...

lol

that's so funny about zachary quinto tho... and yeah, like oldstredshrtevr, i simply assumed that kirk was too emotional to do it right...
