Obviously it exists within Star Trek. It looks like it's a mixture of "Real" science fiction ( I.e The Day The Earth Stood Still) and "fictionalized Sci-fi " ( "Captain Proton") . But what about the big "giants" of Science fiction? Namely Dr Who, Twilight Zone and Star Wars? George Lucas? . My guess is they still exist but in an alternate form. You will not find an interview of George Lucas crediting Star Trek as one of his influences for example. If "Forbidden Planet" exists, I imagine Starfleet would revere this movie as very prophetic.
Now a viewpoint can be made that all of science fiction exists EXCEPT for Star Trek. But Captain Proton and Dixon Hill seems to suggests there's is an ( atleast somewhat) alternate "fiction" in the Star Trek universe that differs from our actual fiction.
What about all the actors and showrunners in Star Trek. Do they exist in an alternate form? People like Harlan Eliison?
I have also wondered if the showrunners over the years have avoided mentioning the big science fiction franchises in order to leave the door open ( even if its a remote possibility) of shared universe crossovers like the long imagined Star Wars/ Star Trek crossover. .
