Sci-Fi Universe -best science fiction magazine ever

Dayton3

I loved Sci-Fi Universe. And not just because they published a huge one page letter from me bashing Star Trek. Mark Altman even singled my letter out for criticism in a notation on the letters page.

But Sci-Fi Universe was not afraid to tell the truth about science fiction franchises or compare them head to head.

Sci-Fi Universe drew the wrath of the DS9 production team and cast when they published their cover story "Dazed and Confused" which slammed DS9s third season hard.

And I'll never forget Mark Altman's short reviews of the various Trek series.

He applauded Deep Space Nine for having the best turnaround quality wise when the fourth season came.

He opened his Voyager review with a simple

"This show is awful".

Gotta love that.

Sci-Fi Universe was very closely tied to Star Trek. I would say that at least half their issues were Trek focused.

One of their best was when they rated EVERYTHING related to Star Trek.

Episodes. Novels. Comics. About everthing one could think of.

Yeah, but discussion of a magazine that hasn't been published in a decade or so? Why bother? It's not like people can read the topic and then think, that sounds good, I'll buy the next issue.

Discussion of ST magazines is valid "Trek literature" discussion.

OK, I just was under the impression that the current magazine gets threads here because many of the contributors are ST authors and not because magazines were also considered literature. My understanding of magazines, with the exception of those collecting short stories, was always that they are more journalistic than literary.

And the Star Trek magazine also gets threads in non-literature forums, i.E. you can find a thread about the current DS9 issue in the DS9 forum.

To be fair, the majority of the threads in this forum start (even if they wander off base quite quickly) with an indication of what book news / excerpts the issues have.

That was a great magazine. Do you remember which issue your letter was in?

R.I.P., Sci-Fi Universe (under Altman's control, anyway).

R.I.P., Cinefantastique.

R.I.P., Starlog (under Kerry O'Quinn and Dave McDonnell).

R.I.P., Fantastic Films.

And to tie Sci-Fi Universe into a Star Trek novelist (and to be a tad self-aggrandizing), the magazine nominated the Voyager episode "Prime Factors" for a 1995 award in the category "Best Writing in a Genre Television Show or Telefilm," an episode for which I co-wrote the story.
