Russell Brand in "Pirates of the Caribbean IV"?

The Borgified Corpse

There are a couple of news items @ http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/FIGMuOKLKyBtKP/news that indicate that comedian Russell Brand (Bedtime Stories, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is in talks to play Captain Jack Sparrow's brother in Pirates of the Caribbean IV.

Personally, I'm jazzed about another Pirates of the Caribbean movie anyway. But I really loved Brand's work in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (and am anxiously looking forward to seeing him reprise the same character in Get Him to the Greek). His comedic persona is like a bizarre cross between Captain Jack Sparrow & Ali G anyway. He seems like a perfect fit.

Although, I think it would be funnier if he were Jack's illegitimate son instead. I like the idea of Jack being saddled with a rumpot hero-worshipping son who is even less in touch with reality than Jack is. Plus, I think it would be funny just trying to see Jack deny this obvious offspring.

What do you folks think?

I recently rewatched the entire Pirates trilogy and found that I had a new appreciation for the films.

I'm totally up for another adventure, I love the notion of Sparrow and Barbarossa hunting for the fountain of youth if that's the route they choose to take.

Russell Brand seems like a perfect addition to the Sparrow clan, I say bring it on.

I enjoyed the first film.
The other two...meh. So, I'm not that excited or interested in a sequel.
Russell Brande doesn't actually make me MORE interested...it's just so...meh. He's a clone. Just like Keith Richards (yes, I know, Depp based it on him.) Why does every relative of Sparrow have to be...another version of Sparrow?

Enh, I dunno. I thought this guy was insufferably annoying in Sarah Marshall. Then I saw his standup last Sunday night and found it somewhat funny. Still, I think he's a bit of a womanizing prick in love with himself. And not in a good/funny way :p

In my opinion, Sparrow works best when he's a relatively serious character who also happens to be slightly insane. When he's used as comic relief, although Depp is very good at it, the character loses some of his edge. Adding Russel Brand to the mix would probably force the writer to make Captain Jack a little more serious than he's been in PotC 2 and 3.

Why is Russell Brand suddenly everywhere? He was on Leno, Letterman, and Fallon all within the span of a week. Now this.

Frankly I find it difficult to find anything likable or funny about him. He's just very awkward.

Well the twat has built his whole career on copying Johnny Depp in those shite films, so it makes sense

Yeah, he musta been in his parents basement one day watching the original POTC and thought...I know, Ill base myself on CapinJackSparrow...
Little Twit

I read the idiot dressed like Osama bin Laden on September 12, 2001 when he worked for MTV, and was subsequently fired. I'm not the most patriotic American in the US, but that's just horribly inappropriate, and frankly enough for me to hate him.

Also, he's supposedly heterosexual. You ladies have fun with that. :rommie:

When you look and act like that, I don't see how you could avoid being promiscuous just to get any.

I just don't understand why anyone else would want to, really.

:guffaw:

This is quite possibly the most insane idea in the history of moviekind.

Naturally, I approve. If it gives Mark Kermode something else to rant about, then I approve wholeheartedly. :bolian:

First reaction... oh god, please no.

Second reaction... well, it would probably do to the Pirates what Batman and Robin did for the Batman franchjise. But that might just be a price worth paying if casting directors saw Brand and Depp in the same scene, and the contrast ended the former's career.

I was so disappointed in the last film, that I really don't care what they do now, or who they cast.

Since I don't know who this clown is, I can't really offer an opinion at this point. I am looking forward to another PotC movie, but I'd like to see it be more in the spirit of the first one, rather than the tone of the last two.
