Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minutes.

Aragorn

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Tru Loved review

Is this the first time he's ever walked out of a movie? Since he saw only eight minutes, he can't give a full review, but he does list all the technical blunders and amateur mistakes he saw. Imagine if he ever had to review an Uwe Boll movie.

Even with this non-review review, he still manages to inject his usual political beliefs. If only this movie had a Neve Campbell, Jennifer Lopez or Angelina Jolie, then the Ebert trademarks would've been complete and he would've sat through the whole thing and given it thumbs up.

Wow. He actually walked out after only 8 minutes? I don't recall him EVER walking out, let alone after only 8 freakin' minutes.

I guess now that he's self-employed, he can do whatever the hell he wants. :D

It seems that after his recent brushes with death, he no longer wants to waste his time with bad movies. I love Roger. His writing style cracks me up.

I think he even sat through all of North...which led to the title of his book "I Hated, Hated, Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie".

Ebert's political viewpoint have been an integral part of his reviews for decades now. People forget that a movie critic is ultimately an opinion writer and has every right to let their worldview affect their reviews. Michael Medvead does the exact same thing in his film criticism from a conservative viewpoint, and he is equally entitled to his outlook.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Thanks for the link. Man, that's classic Ebert :)

As far as political beliefs in reviews--I may not always agree with Ebert's politics, but his understanding of film theory and his ability to actually critique a film (almost a lost art these days) make him an indispensible resource.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Roger Ebert is a very entertaining writer, but I have little to no respect for him as a film reviewer. One of my favorite post-movie watching activities is to go online and read Ebert's review in order to catch his factual errors. Sometimes these mistakes are inconsequential, like the name of a minor character, but sometimes the mistakes are critical to his understanding and judging the film. Either he's not paying attention or his memory is so bad that he can't remember basic facts about a movie between seeing it and writing the review. Whichever it is, he is disqualified from being considered a legitimate film reviewer, in my opinion. Harsh, perhaps, but I've (politely) emailed him about this several times and he's never responded nor corrected the mistakes I pointed out (despite his past requests that readers do just that).

I've noticed plenty of times too that he gets things wrong in his reviews of the vain you're talking about.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Ebert's really the best reviewer working in the mass media. The fact that he expresses himself politically doesn't affect his integrity one whit.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Hey, even Ebert admits the one star is only for the first eight minutes of the film and he is not judging the rest of the film with the star rating.

In his Star Trek: Generations review, he called John Harriman a young Captain Picard. Jean-Luc must not have been very good if he's still a captain 78 years later. :)

Yeah. Clearly a sign of Ebert not paying attention to the movie. I'd love to see what has inbox looked like when the review was published.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

This is how I see it:

If both Roger Ebert and James Beradinelli denounce a film, then that film is not worth driving out to the theatres to check out.

If one of them denounces a film, while the other praises it, then I am willing to give that film a chance.

If both reviewers praise a film, then I know that there is little doubt in my mind that it is a must-see.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

I seldom agree precisely with Ebert, but I find that I can almost always determine whether I'll like a film by reading his review, even if my opinion completely varies from his. The only opinion more valuable to me in deciding if I should see a movie is my significant other's (she and I almost completely agree on books and film).

The review was dead-on where the quality of the film was concerned, however. :)

Plus, Ebert gets off the most observant one-liners about these excursions, as per his "First Contact" review: "I doubted the original Enterprise crew would ever retire because I didn't think they could stop talking long enough. "

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Equally as interesting as his review is his blog post about it, in which he describes his thought process in choosing to stop watching the movie and write his review the way he did. Unlike some other critics who may be content with just panning a flick, at least he's transparent in explaining his rationale.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

This is the same Roger Ebert who vowed to refuse to review anymore Friday the 13th films after the 3rd one after being bombarded in a theatre full of Animal House-style wild and uproarious teenagers during that night's viewing.

I thought that was the whole appeal of seeing a "Friday the 13th" movie in theatres.

Hmmm.

Re: Roger Ebert gives one star to movie he walked out of after 8 minut

Ever see any of the movies Roger Ebert wrote???

Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens (1979)
Up! (1976)
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)

Lets just say that director Russ Meyer was not known to be the Orson Wells of his time and the people who left the drive-ins early did so because they were finished quickly....
