RIP Wendy Hughes

The news of the passing of the very talented Aussie actress, Wendy Hughes, from cancer at age 61, has been announced this weekend.

First thing I saw her in was our very naughty prime time TV soap opera, "Number 96", when she played Lucy Sutcliffe's niece, Vanessa. She shared a very funny bathtub scene, topless, with the gormless nerd, Arnold Feather (Jeff Kevin). This was in the mid 70s.

After many wonderful stage and screen adventures over the decades, including the theatrical feature "Careful, He Might Hear You", Wendy became one of only a handful of Aussie actors to appear in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", as Picard's girlfriend, Nella Daren in "Lessons".

RIP.

Very sad news.

She was, indeed, very talented. I remember getting a big thrill when she made her (excellent) appearance on that TNG episode as Picard's love interest, seeing I had seen her in a few plays beforehand, it was exciting to see an Australian on Star Trek.

Great actress. RIP.

Very sad. I plan to watch "Lessons" tonight. I always thought Lessons was under-rated, it was a very nice sequel to "The Inner Light" and really impacted Picard as a character. Perhaps it's only fault was that the events of this episode are never mentioned again, but thats TNG, or more accurately Star Trek in general, for you.

That's terrible news. She was a wonderful actress. May she rest in peace. :(

Damn. I remember seeing her in a number of movies growing up. I was familiar enough with her that I recognised when she appeared on TNG. Hard to believe she was 61, or that she left us so soon.

Another reminder to stop, smell the roses and consider why we're here. Tomorrow's promised to nobody.

She gave an excellent performance in "Lessons." Of all Picard's women, I always found Nella the most believable "in universe" - the type he'd go for as it were.

R.I.P.

R.I.P. Wendy Hughes:borg:

That is really sad news. Good actress for sure.
I first saw her in an Australian series called "Snowy River: The McGregor Saga"(one of my favorite shows) and I really liked her appearance on TNG also.

As a Yank, I didn't know her other than in Lessons, but she made an impression as a sensuous mature woman, and as said above, an excellent match for Picard. I'll watch the ep tonight in her honor,

It's so strange, I didn't know about this until about 20 minutes ago, and I randomly watched Lessons this morning. RIP Wendy Hughes.

Couldn't agree more. Neela was a character worthy of Picard. They had a real chemistry together.

Not a lot of Australians made an impact in Trek, however Wendy Hughes was great in "Lessons". A sad loss.

Agreed 100% with all of this. It was also one of the most adult relationships in Star Trek IMO... in the sense of playing out as a real relationship between two grown-ups rather than what tends to happen mostly in TV, which is adults behaving as if they're still teenagers.

Great episode. Wendy Hughes certainly left her mark on Star Trek.

RIP indeed.

This is hearbreaking news. Hughes was a talented and gited actor and really, "Lessons" only works as well as it does because of the chemistry between herself and Stewart. A lesser actor in the role, and we might have wound up with much less moving story.

Rest in peace.

Re: RIP Wendy Hughes (Commander Nella Darren)

I'm saddened to hear this. She was a lovely woman and came across as the kind of smart, mature, courageous woman who Picard would find irresistible.
