According to his representative, rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery says Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

52 is way way way too young to die. RIP.

I've seen him several times both with Soundgarden and solo, and whilst I didn't really like Soundgarden, Chris was fantastic on his own and certainly one of the finest rock vocalists I have seen over several decades of gig going.

I remember on one of Soundgarden's earliest trips to the U.K. standing next to Robert Plant who had come to check them out. I mention this because Cornell certainly belonged in that echelon of vocalist.

Awful news.

Unbelievable. He was one of the greatest voices rock has ever known.

He seemed to be going so strong, I was happy that he made it through the 90s and 00s, unlike so many of his contemporaries, and was looking forward to many more years of music from him.

As I said, I wasn't a big fan of Soundgarden, but Mrs Relayer loves them (so does Jr.) and I did see him with them several times and he was a phenomenal vocalist. What I did love unreservedly was his solo acoustic stuff - I am so glad I caught him acoustic live.

He did lots of his own stuff, but here's some great covers.

There's much more out there. Go look.

Rest in peace Chris.

I came to Grunge through Soundgarden's music. Soundgarden 's Superunknown is still one of my favorite albums of all times. Chris's voice is right up there with the great voices of Rock.

I am surprised and sadden by his death. It was too soon.
R.I.P Spoonman. :(

Going to miss this great man and his music. I still go back and listen to Superunknown on a regular basis. Can't say that for many 20+ year old albums.

I must admit Grunge was never really my thing, but I do like his solo work and he had a unique voice. Really liked the Bond theme he did, it's definitely in my top 5.

I was just listening to Fell on Black Days yesterday and marveling at that great voice and then read about his death later the same day. I likes Soundgarden a lot. Loved those odd time signatures. He had children and a wife, didn't he? Sad for them. RIP

Makes you think more about the fact that so many of his songs are about shutting out or wishing for an end to the world.
