Removing Car Battery Cover-Anyone Know How?

The Boy Who Cried Worf

I have to jump start my car later tonight. I have never done it before, but the process seems fairly straightforward. One problem I encountered in looking under the hood is the battery has a cover on it so the terminals aren't exposed. What are these things and how do you get them, off?

Are they rubber covers or hard plastic? And are they over the terminals, or over the whole battery? If they're just terminal covers, you can probably just pop them off with a flathead screwdriver or twist them off like a soda bottle top. If it covers the whole battery, look for screws or wings around the middle bottom or top and just back them off and lift the cover off. Just remember: Never touch the hot side and the body/frame of the engine compartment or ground side at the same time, you'll get a nice little zap.

As for what they are: Looks, rust prevention, keep water out, etc.

One set to the car battery, the other set to your nipples. It's how I jump start myself on a rough day.

You know you want to try it.

Amateur...you really need 50 feet of rope, a chain, stirrups, and an awesome pickup truck to do it right. A hit of ecstasy helps too; that I'd know about such things...

A number of new cars have alternative places to place the jumper cables to help avoid igniting potentially explosive gases that can sometimes escape from batteries.

Usually the owner's manual covers how to jump your particular vehicle.

Did you buy it used?

Well didn't really buy it. More like given to me buy my girlfriend. So if I sued the former owner the amount of misery in my life would go up and the amount of sex in my life would plummet dramatically. Plus since she is the one paying for the new alternator it would just be kinda rude. Yeah the car is 15 years old though so these things should kinda be expected.
