Real Taspar eggs

Story

Called "Balut", it's a Philippine delicacy that looks like and is eaten exactly the same way we saw Gul Madred & Picard eating Taspar eggs in Chain Of Command.

The 18-day-old fertilized duck egg -- a snack widely eaten in the Philippines -- has revolted even the most daring foodies with its carnal textures, earning it lofty rankings on many a "most disgusting/strange/terrifying food" list.
....balut's combination of savory soup, fresh meaty bird and warm yolk is a revelation.

I really can't imagine ever wanting to try something like this.

I like you, human!
Most people become ill at the sight of live taspar. ;)

Your Mother: "How do you know you don't like it until you've tried it Dear?"

I'd give it a shot.

:)

I like to try foods that are new to me, that are more familiar to folks living in other parts of the world. I walk over to Chinatown in Boston when I have a layover in the bus station to get a couple of Preserved Egg Pies... and I keep trying to like durian. But I am not sure I would be able to try this balut!

.... hmmm... I just Googled it and got a look. Really not sure I could do it. IF I had the opportunity, though... I would probably be telling myself that I should try it!

[Balut is featured as one of "The 6 Most Terrifying Foods in the World" article at Cracked.com. It is worth a look if you don't have a full belly!]

My family and I are Filipino, so balut was how I connected to taspar, though taspar seems to be more gooey (so the egg is less developed) than balut. My brother tried his first balut a couple years ago, but he made sure that he could quickly down it with a bottle of beer, just to be on the safe side :)

Of course, some of the bonuses with balut if you're lucky is the unexpected crunchiness of developing bone and cartilage, as well as the occasional feather!
