Plot:
The film, set to hit theaters on November 18th 2011, tells the story of a father and his estranged 11-year-old son who enter the world of robotic boxing. You see, in the future, human boxing has been outlawed, replaced with sports combat between human-trained 2000-pound heavy steel robots. Levy has described the story as “rousing sports movie”.

Dreamworks/Walt Disney Pictures has released the first couple production photos from Shawn Levy’s futuristic robot boxing movie Real Steel..
starring Hugh Jackman

# The robots used in the movie are practical / real props — 19 real-life animatronic 8-foot-tall robot fighters were created for the production.
# Spielberg encouraged Levy to use a mix of real and computer generated, so the fighting sequences will involve Motion-capture animation.

Real Steel (2011)

Sounds a little like the videogame played by Ewan McGregor & Scarlett Johansson in
The Island (2005), the climactic scene in Aliens (1986) and just in general the franchise Transformers.

It's actually based on a short story by Richard Matheson, that was previously filmed as an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE back in the fifties . . . long before TRANSFORMERS.

The original episode, "Steel," starred Lee Marvin in the part now being played by Hugh Jackman.

Good lord, its Robot Wars: The Movie

I wish one of those robots would punch Shawn Levy in the face.

The real question: can it top Robot Jox?

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

Why would boxing be outlawed?

sigh...I suppose it is best not to question these things.

Rockem Sockem robots come to life! I wonder if the heads pop up too.

I agree. This seems like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots: The Movie.

Matheson's story was first published in 1956. Long before Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots.

Maybe because it's seen as too brutal and dangerous, it's certainly not the first time that's been considered.

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

The concept of robot boxing, as a serious sport, seems kind of absurd to me. If you're going to have robots fighting each other why not go the full 9, make it more like gladiatorial combat? Why keep is civilized like boxing? :vulcan:

(Who knows, maybe there's more to it, but seems a bit silly right now)

That was the explanation in the original TZ episode. Boxing between humans had been banned as uncivilized and inhumane.

FYI, I believe that SyFy is rerunning the original version Thursday morning. It's titled "Steel."

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

Im confused, do they actually get inside the robot suits ala Iron Man?

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

Maybe this is a silly question, since I know nothing about boxing other than "two dudes hitting each other is kind of neat," but if human boxing is outlawed, are the human trainers actually any good?

Re: 'Real Steel' (2011) futuristic robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackma

Shouldn't they be doing Robot MMA? Boxing could be outlawed and nobody would care because of MMA.

There's that, too. Nowadays Boxing has become almost irrelevant. If you were to make an actual robot fighting sport it would be more like MMA or pro wrestling, not the "gentleman's sport" of Boxing.
