Rank the late night talk shows!

The Borgified Corpse

Since I've spent the last few months as a gentleman of leisure (read: unemployed), I've watched a lot of late night TV. Here's how I rank the current crop of late night talk shows and I'd like to know what your ranking is. Enjoy!

1. The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.
Conan O'Brien is simply a master at the form. He has great interplay with the energy of the audience. He's a great stand-up comedian. His guest interviews are always fun & entertaining. I think moving from Late Night to The Tonight Show has taken away some of his edge but that's balanced out by the return of Andy Richter!

2. Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
The most purely funny man on TV. He doesn't need writers, "bits," or guests. Just point the camera at him and he's an automatically funny guy. (Although, would he be as funny if he didn't have a Scottish accent?)

3. The Jay Leno Show.
He still can't interview a guest to save his life but he's a modern master of the art of stand-up comedy.

4. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
He's struggling but he's getting better. I'm not sure Fallon has the temperament for a talk show host. However, many of his ideas are pure comedy gold. If you haven't seen them already, YouTube his "Head Swap" segments.:guffaw:

5. Talk Show with Spike Feresten.
His schtick is starting to wear thin with me. "Idiot Paparazzi" is brilliant but his "Hollywood Douchebag" segments are just insulting.

6. Late Show with David Letterman.
10 years ago, the man was brilliant. Now, he's resting on his laurels. He's mostly just a cranky old man now. I'd put him out to pasture.

7. Jimmy Kimmel Live!
I think he's just speaking to a different demographic or something. He seems like a nice, entertaining guy. We're just on different wavelengths.

8. Last Call with Carson Daly.
Why does anyone allow this man to be on TV?! He's not funny. He's not entertaining. He seems to hate his own show. NBC was better off when they used to fill his timeslot with old reruns of SCTV.

So how do you rank the late night talk show hosts?

1. COLBERT! WOO! 2. Daily Show. 3. Conan. Don't watch the others. Leno is toothless and lame and his monologue delivery is just so horribly artificial and awful. Fallon is painfully unfunny.

I only watch Craig. None of the others make me laugh-or even smile. Although Fallon has some good ideas. Maybe if he went over and wrote for Conan they could put a good show together.

Probably. Honestly, if they were looking for an SNL alum to host Late Night, Seth Meyers probably would have been a better choice.

I've been thinking the same thing about Spike Feresten. We'd be better off if they just scrapped his show and moved "Idiot Paparazzi" to one of the other late night shows. I think it would easily fit into the style of The Jay Leno Show or The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.

BTW, if you haven't seen "Head Swap," I really recommend it. Here's the links so far. It's in ingenious idea that just kinda sneaks up on you.

Ferguson -- Yeah we all know his monologues are brilliant, but what puts him at the top for me is that his interviews are JUST as fun and unpredictable. Unlike the other hosts, he doesn't check out once the guests come on, or ask the same boring questions night after night.

Letterman -- For whatever reason, he seems COMPLETELY re-energized now, and is actually fun to watch again. Plus there just seems to be an energy to that Ed Sullivan Theater that makes me want to hang out there for awhile.

Conan -- I loved his old show, but his new one just feels WAY too safe and watered-down. There are a few glimpses of the old absurdist humor, but for the most part it feels like he's just doing the same cheesball stuff Leno used to do. And I don't know how, but Conan's interviewing skills seem to have gotten WORSE now.

Leno -- No matter how lame his show is, there's something just so damn LIKEABLE about Leno that I have a hard time hating him the way others do. And I have to admit, I do find myself chuckling now and then during his opening monologues.

Fallon -- I actually didn't mind him on SNL, but here he's a freakin disaster. More than anything, I just feel bad for the Roots bandmembers having to SIT through all that night after night. lol

1. Jon Stewart/The Daily Show - Jon Stewart will always be my hero.
2. Stephen Colbert/The Colbert Report
3. David Letterman - I've always liked him
4. Conan O'Brien (although I have not seen him since he took over the new show - I'm really talking about the old show here)

1. The Daily Show. Especially during election season-- and that's every day of every year these days. Sadly, Jon Stewart has a politcal insight that is far keener than anything CNN, Fox, or MSNBC ever display.

2. The Colbert Report. I tend to think of TDS and CR as two halves of the same show, really.

3. Conan O'Brien. While I prefer the biting political satire of the previous two shows, for screwball antics Conan is hard to beat. He and Andy tend to be at their funniest when they aren't working with pre-written material.

4. Craig Ferguson. His monologues are probably the best in the history of late night. On a good night, he can move up to first on this list.

5. Dave Letterman. I used to like his show, but I rarely watch it now. In the same timeslot, Colbert and Leno/Conan have been more consistently funny for years. Letterman too often just rambles.

5. Jimmy Fallon. Like early Conan, his show is hit or miss. Unlike early Conan, he doesn't have nearly as much potential. I did enjoy his recent Monty Python tribute episode, though.

6. Carson Daley. He can be entertaining when he's interviewing a guest he likes. Otherwise, even Jimmy Fallon is better than him. And that's sad.

7. Jimmy Kimmel. The only time this man has ever been funny was when he co-hosted Win Ben Stein's Money.
